A Parisian Summer Weekend

Aug 22, 2010 23:43

I took the opportunity to meet Beverly while she was in Paris.

The weekend started in the wee hours of a Friday morning. I departed Kings Cross St Pancras in a haze of exhaustion and upon arrival, checked straight into a hotel to sleep.

Later I explored the farmers markets near Republique and bought a plump nectarine and baguette. With gleaming eyes, I was like a kid in a candy shop except instead of a store, it was a street of boucheries, patisseries and fromageries.

I visited the Lourve museum but it was all too much for a sleep deprived traveller. My feet were tortured and I must have sat in every chair along route through the exhibits. It took half an hour to navigate to the Mona Lisa. I snapped the obligatory photo before retreating back to the hotel.

Tempted by Parisian pho, I had a late lunch at a Vietnamese diner. The pho was good but after I took a nap, I woke to a blinding headache and a stomachache to match. By then it was time to meet Bev so I trudged over clutching my stomach in a cold sweat.

Miraculously I recovered in time to enjoy our first dinner was at my favorite Paris restaurant, La Nouvelle Epoque.

The next few days were fantastic fun. We went shopping at La Fayette, La Vallee Village and Louis Vuitton. Lunched at Angelina, reputed to be where Coco Chanel was a regular diner.

My last dinner was at a Le Petit Célestin near Sully-Morland. It's a cosy place where service is colloquial. Two French gentlemen noticed us salivating over their fois gras. Before they started their meal, they offered me a taste and although I hesitated, I seized the moment and accepted graciously. Ah, the French random acts of kindness!

My mega-early train to Paris. Never again.

Instinctively found the farmers markets where the locals buy fresh food.

Enjoying the sunshine and deck chairs by the Seine.

Taken from the Lourve while resting my tootsies.

I thought the crowds here were are crazy...

...until I saw the ones in front of the Mona Lisa!

Salmon tartare starter at La Nouvelle Epoque.

Like the starter, my steak was a little oversalted but still very nice.

Heavenly thick hot chocolate from Angelina. Served with whipped cream.

Yum, we love it!

Caved and bought a little something from LV.

A lovely time was had in Paris. Fine food, weather, shopping and company!
