For the Eppes family, it had been a long yet perfect day in every way.
Donnie was well experienced at Disneyland at this point, but it was Charlie's first time so little Donnie tugged his baby brother around by the hand, excited to show him all his favorite places in the happiest place on earth.
Charlie somehow tapped unforeseen energy levels and not only kept up all day, he skipped his regular nap - still too amped from meeting Mickey Mouse in person and getting his first set of mouse ears with his name embroidered on them.
The boys had reveled in the rides and cheered at the Main Street Electrical Parade, finally oohing and awwing at the fireworks, their tiny faces shining with joy and wonder at the grand finale - huge explosions of color over Sleeping Beauty's castle leaving them filled with awe.
Then, as if both their little engines ran out of gas at once, they crashed hard.
Margaret took up wee Charlie in her arms, limp as a sack of potatoes, the mouse ears hat he refused to take off askew on the curly little head laid on her shoulder.
Alan hoisted Donnie up on his hip to carry him back to the car. At his age he should have protested, but instead he just wrapped his arms around his father's neck like he used to when he was little.
The boys would sleep on the way home and wake only briefly when their parents slipped them into bed at home.
Later there would be pictures to develop and put into albums, pictures that would yellow with age yet still be enjoyed for decades to come - pictures that would inspire a whole new generation of Eppes children to want to discover the magic for themselves.
