Snipers don't get nervous. They don't get sweaty palms.
They also don't tend to have kids.
His hand raised, hovering over the birthing center door, Ian paused. He was only supposed to be a sperm donor, doing a lesbian friend a favor. But this child, this baby boy, was a part of him even if he'd given up all rights to fatherhood in advance.
Though he'd never admit it, Ian feared he'd love his son on first sight and not be able to just hand him over to someone else to raise.
He knocked lightly on the door and heard a soft 'Come in' welcome him into the room.
He opened the door cautiously, closing it behind him before going around the curtain that obscured Alma's bed.
She lay there propped up with a little bundle on her chest. All he could see was blanket, but Alma was beaming despite the sweat still on her brow from labor.
"I came as fast as I could," Ian told her.
"So did he!" She cocked her head to Ian to approach. "Come hold him."
Ian approached and got his first glimpse of the baby's face. His skin had a slight dusky hue to it, closer to Alma's tone than his own. His eyes were closed in peaceful slumber.
Ian held out his arms and Alma put the baby bundle into them.
"I'm calling him Sean."
As Ian cradled his infant son in his arms Sean's eyes opened and gazed up at him. The tightness in his chest was like a hand gripping his heart only it wasn't fear he felt inside: just love for this helpless little person who looked at him as if he was his whole world.
"Hello, Sean," he whispered, low enough that Alma couldn't hear. "I'm your father."
