Alexander Zemlinsky: Austrian composer around the turn of the century (19th-20th, that is). Slightly older than Mahler. If I'd stayed in musicology, I probably would have done my dissertation on him and then gone on to be the U.S. expert on Zemlinsky (as far as I know, there still isn't one). Wrote some nice lieder, some sweeping orchestral
