I'd forgotten how much upper arm strength conducting uses. In retrospect, I think it's a very good thing that I'd taken fencing the year before I took conducting back in college. A foil is a lot heavier than a baton, and if you can hold a foil up for an hour or two, conducting is comparatively easy-peasy, at least physically.
One of the members of the chorus asked for some volunteers for a recording project, to record a bit from Mozart's Requiem, which we're performing next week anyhow. A number of people volunteered (including
kathrynt), but I hadn't. Due to some confusion about timing, Kathryn hadn't had a chance to get lunch, so I was going to bring her a sandwich. After she got there and noticed there was only one actual soprano, I got a second call asking if I could bring the sandwich and then stay. So I sang some, but mostly conducted. We did the whole group thing a couple of times, with me doing both at once. Then we recorded each section individually a couple of times, with me conducting all of them except for the sopranos, where I sang and someone else conducted. And WOW can I feel it in my arm and shoulder.
Tonight we go to the opera and see Tales of Hoffmann. This was a favorite of mine back in high school, so I'm looking forward to seeing a live production.
