The whole line of reasoning reminds me a little of two different sf stories. In one, they need someone to report back on this place (through a portal or some such; this was when hard sf used rocket ships and blasters, soft sf used alternate dimensions, and women came out of gumball machines). The place drives everyone catatonic. Finally they decide to send a schizophrenic, who comes back smiling and private and calm and then passes back through the portal, disappearing it as she goes. In the other story, they need people who can cope with extreme weirdness to speak to aliens, so they start infants on hallucinogens so their ideas of the universe are extremely fluid. None of the grown-up children can speak to anyone. One of them can see aliens, but only the invisible ones studying humanity without our knowledge.
(I'm not sure I agree with the portrayal of my reading habits I'm giving with this conversation, by the way. I'm pretty sure I read some non-off-the-wall stuff too.)
