The Weekly Update

WORK:
One month already, wow!  The pace has really picked up, but I believe I'm adapting well enough.  Most of the nervous energy from being in a new environment seems to have simmered off.  I'm actually sleeping fairly regularly now.  I can't remember when was the last time I had a lengthy period of normal sleeping patterns.  Huh.  Amazing what the security of a steady, practically secure job can do.  I'm glad I traded academics for the daily grind.  The scholarly life has its appeals all right, but I think people tend to idealize it in general.  I must admit that one of my pet peeves is people who think that it's easy and simple and always less complicated than the rest of the world.  It's like the idealization of youth in that respect.

TV/FANDOM:

I can't find Doctor Who anymore on my local PBS station.  Why?! I've only managed to watch about a third of series one.  I can't believe the amount of shippiness in this series, so I must see more. ;-)  Rose and Nine are surprisingly nice together.

I'm getting old -- I didn't even feel like staying up to watch CSI:NY at 10 p.m.  But...but...how will find out what happens between Danny and Lindsay?  I don't actually fall asleep at 10, but I need time to wind down and fall asleep.  Also, it had been a long day at work.

Yet I managed to stay up for Without a Trace the following night.  Sadly, the premiere was kind of disappointing.  It seemed to move slowly despite the fact there were two cases being covered, with one of them being set up to a multi-episode arc.  The cases should've been interesting, so maybe it was bad editing/directing.  And is the actress who plays Sam pregnant? Maybe it was an unflattering jacket and angle, but she looks bigger in some scenes.

I LOVE Ugly Betty!

Sorry, good-bye Jericho.  You can't have the same show when you've killed so many of the characters you introduced and set up.  Some of them had lame, overly quick-and-glossed-over deaths too.

Cold Case continues to impress me.

I'm still kind of sad about Stargate: Atlantis.  I haven't even watched my season 3 DVDs yet, and I've had them for a whole week.  Still withholding full judgment on season 4; I'll wait to hear what my fellow fans have to say about it.  Right now I don't know if I would buy season 4 on DVD, even just to see how the season 3 finale is resolved.

I am totally into DC Animated Universe at the moment.  Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League/Unlimited have been in the DVD player for the past 3 weeks.  They can't disappoint me because they've already completed their runs.  Excuse me while I choke back a sob. (Just kidding.)

LIFE:
Um, I like my new job and I'm pretty satisfied with where I am right now, but I still don't have a social life.  I'm just getting into the swing of things so I don't have much energy and motivation left over for personal stuff.  I'm not even ready to join a gym yet.

However, today Sib and I did go around the town a bit today.  After a quick trip to my workplace in search of my wallet (I'd left it at work on Friday, d'oh!), we found a new Asian grocery store.  After some shopping, it was Crispers for lunch -- Harvest Cobb salad and chocolate lava cake for me -- and then the Goodwill to drop off some clothes I wanted to donate.  We ended up browsing at Goodwill, where Sib snagged a Nine West purse for $5 and I got a new cell phone case for $0.99.  Then we found yet another new Asian grocery store when I was actually looking for a consignment boutique where I wanted to try to sell some shirts.  This grocery didn't have as much stuff though, and it turned out that particular shop stops buying a couple hours before closing on Sundays.

I'm a low-key person, so today felt productive enough for me.  Mostly I'm pleased we found two new Asian grocery stores.  We decided to stop going to the small Asian grocery close to where we live.  The owner has a bad attitude.  He's always had it, but I decided I'd had enough when he became quite snippy with me the last time I went.  I had to return a couple of food items because they hadn't been sealed properly and were leaking, and he acted like I was unreasonable and trying to rip him off.  It was a grand total of maybe $3.25!  I thought I was being nice when I suggested he contact the manufacturers because the fault was clearly with them and not him.   He still managed to take it as some kind of affront, griping about how he had to take a loss.   Plus, I think he's biased against American Chinese.  The ones who can't speak Chinese anyway.  I've noticed that he seems a lot warmer and more helpful to Chinese customers.

What a jerk.  He and his store get a big stamp of consumer disapproval from me.  I'm also boycotting that Chinese take-out place next door to him because I'm pretty sure it's owned by his family.  There are several other Chinese take-out places in this town to choose from.  So, now I am in search of a new source for my fortune cookie fortunes.
