Last week I was driving along and singing to the tune on my radio. Suddenly a car coming the other way flashed his lights at me. Now in Western Australia this is a secret sign that the police are up over the hill waiting with their little speed gun. I checked my speed and slowed down to 60km. Next thing I know I'm over the hill and a policeman is pulling me over. I was so surprised and I told him so. 'I'm sure I was doing the right speed' I told him, not mentioning that I had slowed down with the help of a kind motorist flashing me. 'Yes he said you were if it was a 60km zone but you have just passed a 40km school zone'. Well I really was shocked so I didnt need to pretend. He asked to see my licence and I showed him and said, 'if you think the woman in the picture looks larger than me you may say so."
He did, 'well done he said you look great.' I made a few jokes and he smiles and says this is just a warning, off you go and be careful next time.'
This little incident reminds me of the time I worked in the country. It was my first day at work and Nath's first day at a new school. Again, I was stopped by a cop as I flew along the highway to pick up 'Mr Wonderful from school. In those days they used to ask if you had a reason for your rush. So I looked up at him, managed to squeeze a tear from my eye and said, "Today is my son's first day at school, he was very nervous and I just want to make sure he is ok." I think the tear helped because after listening to me he waved me on and even said he hoped Nath would be ok.
The thing about a country town is that everybody knows you, so of course I got to meet this policeman socially and trust me, I was always on my best behaviour. We had only been there a few weeks when Jamie crashed our car, it was driven through the main street to the car yard and I swear everyone knew about it. Still I guess it was a topic for dinner conversations.
