Twenty Movies

Joel is the winner. But barely, because he insulted the first Austin Powers. That movie was CLEARLY genius. It was the other two that ruined it.

A. CLOSER

Genius movie of the year. I love how it really made you question whether you really want the honest truth in relationships. Made me a Natalie Portman fan as well as a Clive Owen fan... for the way he really made me HATE his character.

B. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Umm this is what I get for watching Bravo late at night. Liking this kind of movie makes me think I need therapy. Twisted.

C. RULES OF ATTRACTION

Wow, no one got this. It had James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel and Shannon Sossamon (sp?) among others. It's lots of really fucked up university kids. Quite dark, lots of drug/party/sex scenes as well as this one - a girl who feels as if she'll never be noticed by her crush commits suicide in the common washroom. Shannon's character gives her one last kiss then freaks out. Another one of those "Emily's gonna need therapy" movies.

D. SIXTEEN CANDLES

Oh soooo cute. How can anyone not love this high school lovey dovey story? You at least have to love "AUTOMOBILE!?".

E. CHICAGO

Ah, musicals. Don't tell me you weren't singing along to this one.

F. AMELIE

This film deserved all the attention it got. The little things this one girl did changed the lived of those around her. And it's sooo loveably french, too. It left me feeling so good about the world.

G. THE LITTLE MERMAID

My childhood favourite. Amazing score, too... I still listen to it. *blushes*

H. BENNY AND JOON

It even says it right on the pic! No one got this!? Cuuuute love story. Johnny's an eccentric magician-y type, and she's a mentally handicapped girl. Love ensues.

I. CRUEL INTENTIONS

All I remember is that Ryan Phillippe was soooo hott in this.

J. ZOOLANDER

I never saw this until like 3 years after it came out on video. One of the most quoteable and hilarious movies of my lifetime.

K. OCTOBER SKY

Umm I think most of my love for this came from my rooting for the "underdog" - but also Jake Gyllenhaal. Yumm. My love for this movie was kinda killed by those Sir Winston screenings, though.

L. ENCINO MAN

Man, do you remember how CBC used to air Disney movies (or at least family movies) every Sunday at 7PM? This one aired sooo many times and my whole family loved it.

M. LEGALLY BLONDE

Yes, blondes can be smart. Bend & Snap!

N. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Shame on you ALL for not knowing this. Another one of my favourites as a kid, I watched the WHOLE movie every spring (man, it's like 3 hours or something). My parents were boggled until I was like "It's such a good story!" and they were like "Emily, it's the bible!" and then it alllll made sense. I loved when the green mist of the plague creeped through the town. Very effective.

O. GARDEN STATE

Oh Zach Braff, I love thee. And Natalie. Brilliant love story that maintained its artsy feeling while still being REAL. I can't believe how it went so unnoticed. From the trailer, I knew I wanted to see it ASAP but I didn't get to see it until it came out on video. Then again, my parents hated it. So meh.

P. THE NINTH GATE

Spooky Johnny Depp movie. He's investigating these books that were supposedly altered by the devil. Note the "LCF" in the rock under the lantern - Lucifer. The best scene is when he's doing the girl and she turns into the devil. Don't mention that to a guy while screwing around, trust.

Q. AUSTIN POWERS (first one)

Maybe it's that my dad's a hairy brit, but I LOVE this movie.

R. CHOCOLAT

Johnny, chocolate, french, love... need I go on?

S. DECONSTRUCTING HARRY

Oh Woody Allen is a comic GENIUS. Showcase and Bravo often show his movies so check them out if you get a chance.

T. GOOD WILL HUNTING

Matt Damon is sexy and smart... you want to help him, hug him, understand him, slap him for wasting his talent. That's one convincing character. Ben's obviously the dumb one in real life, though, so he gets no props. Oh, and Robin Williams is amazing whether he's being the funny man or not.
