The next pilot up for a spoiler-free review: Unforgettable
First, off, Poppy Montgomery \o/
ngl, I've had a bit of a girlcrush since Without a Trace, so it's awesome to see her on a show again.
And I'm also very glad that I really like her character so far on this show... she's interesting, well-written, and she can remember everything, which is awesome and kind of like a superpower. And they treat it as a double-edged sword without going over the top about it, which is good. Plus, she's badass without being over-the-top badass or nothing-but-badass and while still being nice and not a total "you talk to me, I kick your ass now" bitch.
So, basically back to the whole "well-written" thing.
The other characters, though, are not particularly interesting... at least not as of the pilot. They're all just kind of... there, helping out. Not bad, not good, just there. They weren't bland either, though, they just didn't have that much to do, and save the main cop guy didn't get much character development. I get the feeling there will be more of them later, but the show is primarily about Poppy's character, at least in the pilot.
That said, I really liked this pilot.
I watch a lot of crime dramas, and after a while, even if the characters are good or the show is fun or the cases are interesting and you love the show, it gets to the point where every episode of every show feels like every other episode of that show, and sometimes every other show... just, over-serialized, over-standardized, like they just use a template and fill in the blanks.
This show, however, felt unique and well written, not like every other episode of every other crime drama out there, and that was a Very Good Thing, imo. (speaking of, the Castle season premiere yesterday? same deal. it surprised me how different it felt, and in a good way)
Also, there's something that looks like it'll be a character (and possible story) arc as well, which most crime dramas don't have, so, win.
Loses points for lack of much humor, though. I like when there's humor. I hope they add more humor in episodes to come. This would make it even better.
Even given the lack of humor, though, I'd definitely give this pilot a solid A by crime drama standards, and then maybe a B+/A- comparing to tv pilots overall.
...so now because it's not like every other cop show it's probably gonna get canceled and I'm gonna get sad, cuz that always happens and American audiences can't stand when things are "different" :p
