2033 Haste Ave (Good)

We went to Everest Properties to look ask about a listing for 2322 Shattuck (the Berkeley Symphony apartment building, listed on the NRHP, and a building that caught my eye on my first visit to Max), but the keys were out with someone else, and we checked out 2033 Haste instead.  It's closer to Maddy, and on first look seemed a little shady.  However, the security seems pretty decent, and the property seemed generally well cared for (with the odd exception of a ply wood covered sliding glass door).  The building seemed labyrinthine, but quiet and densely packed at 60 units.  There was a drained reflection pool in the courtyard, surrounded by plants.  I liked that part.  The manager's son showed us around, and he seemed pretty nice.  The unit had been vacated a month before by an Indian couple who had sadly lost their jobs and had to move back home.  The guy said that there'd be plenty of units available at the end of the semester/ beginning of summer when we're actually looking.  The manager's name is Rama, we should talk to him for more information.

And now, the data.

1 bed/ 1 bath, with very basic (though sparkling clean!) fixtures.  Small (1.5 person) kitchen with a newish (5-7 yo) fridge and electric stove.  Freshly shampooed carpet was spotless.  The bedroom was decently sized, but the living area would make it difficult to house both dining table and couch, so we'd have to finagle something (not much of a problem, really).  The balcony had doors into the living area and the bedroom, and seemed pretty neat.  Two hallway closets, but not one in the bedroom. $995/ mo.

My thoughts:  Initially I didn't like the place.  But after thinking about it for a bit, I'm warming up to it.  I can definately see us living there fairly happily.  The small living area gives me pause, but not enough to make me not want to live there.

Max's thoughts:  Thinks its pretty good, good price.  Initial inspection was good (Max did note that the counter was a little banged up, but was largely cosmetic - good eye!), and was a good distance to school.  He likes it.

I think we should check back in with them in another month or two for a specific unit.
