A mixed bag

ordinarywhirled mentioned Kent State's spot in the Big Dance (and I'm totally rooting for the Golden Flashes - which, btw, what the hell is that anyway?), so I thought I'd mention what's happening with UT: We're the #2 seed to the Atlanta division. That's awesome. I'm thrilled. Normally, I could give less than a crap about basketball, but it's Texas, so I care. It's like last year when I marginally cared about the Spurs winning whatever they call the Series in the NBA.

SI.com wrote of our team: Overrated: Texas.
The 'Horns were anointed a Final Four-type team before the season, and for some reason nothing -- not even a 31-point loss to Duke, a 17-point loss to Tennessee and a 21-point loss at Oklahoma State -- has been able to skew that perception. Supposed star Daniel Gibson is too inconsistent.

Okay. For one, we have other "star players" besides Daniel Gibson (I watch the clips on the news enough to know some about our team this year), like P.J. Tucker, Brad Buckman, LaMarcus Aldridge, and I-can't-remember-his-first-name Paulino. So the dude who wrote that? Kinda right about our losses - we had a really embarrassing loss to Kansas in the Big 12 Championship game (80-68) - but also absolutely wrong because we still kick ass most of the time. We won more games than anyone else in the conference (27-6) for cripes sake. SI needs to shut up. And wait until we get our asses handed to us by Penn in the first round.

I'm so happy. My serotonin level seems to finally gotten back to a higher level. No more "Must. Eat. Whole. Tray. Of. Brownies." Which I did. Several times. I'm also no longer yelling at dairy products. So: progress.

The people at Headline News seem to be super-excited today. There are bad things happening everywhere and there's film of all of it. Fires here in Texas causing giant car pile-ups; massive tornado outbreaks wiping out Springfield, MO and other cities; students are missing in RI and presumed drowned; kids aren't getting recess anymore; a plane crashed in water off the coast of S. Calif; and poor Maureen Stapleton has died.

On a whim while wandering in Walgreen's (alliteration, anyone?), I picked up one of those Shed Ender things that have been advertised heavily in cheaply made commercials with that one guy who does the voiceover for every cheap "Only Available In This Special TV Offer" product out there. (BTW, it's only $9.99 at the Walgreens, but $11.95 plus shipping/handling off the TV, though you do get a lint brush with the TV offer.) Anyway... I was dubious, but it really works well. Better than the professional grooming tool I picked up at the pet store a few weeks ago. It really does get a lot more hair. My kittens are loving it. Andrew will not leave me alone now because I think he likes how his fur feels now. And Shadow's thick fur's been thinned out a little, and just in time, too, since the weather's decided it's time for summer. My only complaints about it is that it's configured so the handle is perpendicular to their spine as you brush (which makes it difficult to get their back if they're lying on their right side... you have to flip them over), and the comb is small so you have to stop every few strokes to pull the hair out. But those are really very minor inconveniences, considering.
