First time I ever watch Glee live, and the first time I ever remember actually watching an episode all the way through, and it made me bawl my eyes out.
It wasn't perfect, but goddamn, if the actress playing Beiste and the actor playing Kurt haven't been bullied at some point in real life I'll eat my hat. Their acting just - blew me away.
Kurt's storyline had me bawling because having that other school be so close and so far away just span me right back to getting an assisted place at my high school - the last year assisted places were ever provided by the government, to 'even' the gap between private schools and regular schools - and finding out I'd got it, and hitting my head on the roof of the car when I jumped for joy. That school was the making of me but I couldn't have gone there without that financial assistance, and I can't help but look at Kurt's storyline and worry about how many people didn't get my lucky escape.
Beiste's storyline had me bawling because of the realism; I accept my body, as she seems to, but waiting for the right person gets so damned hard and demoralising sometimes. Heck, my first proper kiss felt all too much like hers - an unreasonably attractive man, and one night only. Though, admittedly, in my case I later found out he happened to have a girlfriend at the time, soooooo.
Well done, Glee. Your writers get it wrong more often than I'd like, but your actors damn well pulled it off today.
