Today is my one day of the work week when I don't have to be at 64th St and McDowell so early that it's still dark out. My job is very different, but I like it. I had spent most of January training to ask potential blood donors if they have various diseases from babesiosis to malaria to hepatitis and if they "ever had sex with a male who has had sex with another male at any time since 1977?" (that's the female version of the question) and what to document and do if they say the dreaded "yes." It's actually really interesting--the majority of people are pretty normal and I haven't yet had to deal with a gay man who didn't know that we can't let him donate.
So my training was M-F, 7:30am to 4pm at 32nd St and Bell--no biggie. But after we got tested for and passed the interview section of the donation process, we went out into the "field," as they say, to practice our interview skills. I did one week at a UBS center that was pretty close to my apartment, but now I'm on almost my 3rd week of being on the mobile donation units (which is what I'll be doing once I get out of phleb training) and the hours are pretty killer. Tomorrow and Thursday I have to be at work at 6am and that's comparitively late compared to what it was earlier this week--4:55am and 5:10am. I'm not complaining exactly, it's just damn early--I mean, it's before Starbucks even opens! Every day is different because we have different blood drives every day and every week. It's definitely fun and active work and the day goes by quickly, but I hope I can get used to getting up so early.
I realize that was kind of boring for an overdue update, but now I have to get going. ;)
