My cat is sitting on the windowsill, looking down below at the maintenence people garbling on walkie-talkies. I love watching her watch things with such patient and alert curiosity.
I am reading a book about macrobiotics, but there are some words (that are, presumeably, foods) that I don't recognize, so I thought I would get on the internet and search them out. What, for example, is daikon? Or mochi? Or kombu?
The philosophy of microbiotics is very interesting and definitely seems to ring true--but there are some foods used that I have never heard of in my life. I'm reading this book not because I want to become a macrobiotic eater, but because I'm interested in the power of food and eating. It amazes me (although it really shouldn't, because it makes perfect sense) that what you put into your body is your fuel for living, and that this fuel has a huge impact on a person's day to day life. That might sound very, you know, "duh!", but it's really awesome and interesting when you think about it. More importantly, it's scary to think that many people don't think about what they eat or how it's affecting them.
One of the neatest things I read about is chewing. Macro's chew the hell out of stuff (I'm talking like a hundred times a bite) to get the food liquidy with saliva and enzymes to be digested properly. Once I started thinking about it, I realized that I don't chew very much--that sometimes, especially when I'm hurried at work, I tend to just chuck and swallow. And I'm quite sure I'm not the only one! Furthermore, I noticed that a lot of processed food really can't be chewed up very well--it's already soft and chewy and dissolves really quickly. Stuff like white bread and ice cream and french fries is just in your mouth for a second before it's paste down your throat.
Ick. This entry is getting a little gross and graphic. But interesting, no?
I better get back to my investigation of what tempeh is.
