14th and 15th of April - International Moment of Laughter Day and Children with Alopecia Day

Apr 15, 2010 01:04

Hello Celebratskiteers, again, apologies for the lateness and doubled nature of this post, I am always striving to post every day, but it's fairly difficult.

Anyway, Yesterday was International Moment of Laughter Day, a day I spent with the wonderful Max, guest blogger and cockney thief that he is. At first we just hung around, shooting the proverbial shit waiting for a tardy mechanic.

Recently Max had been to Great Britain, and whilst there had picked up some gifts, he brought me back an awesome jumper and a book of scottish sweets. Max suggested we find a recipe in the book and try and make it to celebrate the day. At first it wasn't apparent how this would provide us with several moments of laughter, but it soon became apparent, once we began to cook, that this was going to be one of the most hilarious twenty minutes of my life.

I assure you, he's not that happy that Claggum exists

Claggum requires two ingredients, Treacle, and Water; two cups and one cup respectively. The recipe asked us to heat the water softly for a bit and then heat it up quickly. We did this. We were then asked to add the treacle and wait until, somewhat cryptically, a drop of the mixture formed a small ball between thumb and forefinger when placed in a bowl of cool water.

"Scotland, please stop, you're making no sense"

We could not achieve this, the mixture reached a frothy, seething mass, like a boiling sea in hell. But when placed into a bowl of cool water, all that would happen is that it would make the water yellow and slightly smelly. We kept this up for so long but to no avail.

Flirting with death

We managed to fuck up a mixture containing two ingredients and the simplest recipe. It was so hilarious as to be indescribable.

We ended up using the entire tub of treacle, still to no avail, so in the end we put it in a big jar and left it to sit. Apparently Max is going to have it on pancakes. I pity him and wish him luck.

Today was Children with Alopecia Day.

Occasionally this blog teaches me something, not always, sometimes I just get sick, but sometimes I learn. Today was one of those days. Alopecia is a bizarre condition in which hair is lost from the scalp and body.

Occasionally it just appears in a small circle in somebody's hair, but it can lead to overall baldness. It is not permanent, well, sort of, apparently people suffering Alopecia can suffer in a more or less consistent cycle of hair loss and re-growth.

At first this doesn't seem so terrible, but then you begin to think of the stress and ostracism suffered by people with this condition, let alone children, and how awful their lives must be. But then again, there are a lot of worse conditions one could suffer from, and being bald is not terrible in and of itself. Except in the case of children, and probably early adolescence, where it could be potentially scarring.

I strongly suggest you research this, as I had not heard of it, and it's a fascinating subject.

Happy Moment of Laughter Day, and Children with Alopecia Day
