23rd of Feb - Curling is Cool Day

Feb 23, 2010 10:21

When I first looked at the Calender and read 'Curling is Cool Day' I thought 'PAH!' Curling is not cool, curling is a sport I for some reason associate with turtles. As I had to blog about yesterday I thought this for most of the day until about ten minutes ago, when I did a little reserch.

Don't believe the hype, Curling is the freaking bomb.

the hype

How bad could a sport where you knock pudding with handles

(previously watermelon with handles)

Around the ice using brooms

Whilst wearing your grandmas slippers?

truly this is the sport of kings.

Curling is played thus: Two teams of four take turns hurling a blue, granite, polished stone (read: pudding) across the ice toward one of the four houses (a circular mark on the ice), the aim is to get ten or more stones as close to the Home as possible before the other team. There are two sweepers for each house who follow the stone and guide it using their brooms.

How cool. Although one has to wonder how that started, I mean, that's a pretty convoluted game. It's part of the winter Olympics though, so it must be pretty legit. Looking over the Wikipedia page again I see that there is another aspect of the game I forgot to mention: Curling Pants. There's nothing very spectacular about them, other than the fact that they're called Curling Pants, "Hey little lady, like the look of my Curling Pants. Thought you would, wanna touch them?"

And on that note, Happy Curling is Cool Day
