Feb 10, Feb 10, febten, feptin, feptain, ceptain, captain!
Huh, what a coincidence, because today is Plimsoll Day, a day where we are all expected to remember Samuel Plimsoll.
He looks this sad in every picture
Samuel Plimsoll was a politician of sorts back in the days of yore (1800's) who's contribution to society is still in practice today. See, back when the world was new and people where moving to the colonies and catching scurvy, the most used form of transport was the ship. The problem was these ships could get hideously overcrowded, what with the many crew-members, passengers, slaves, stowaways, goats and rum. Whilst this seems great for when the ship inevitably ends up stuck on a sandbank and the crew can snack on each other indefinitely, it sucked in the long run. So, because of this, the estimable Samuel Plimsoll introduced the Plimsoll Mark, a mark painted in the ships hull which indicated the waterline at which maximum cargo capacity was reached.
I always thought a plimsoll was a kind of umbrella
I WAS WRONG!
Happy Plimsoll Day
