Ficlet Prompt: Child

Jun 27, 2010 23:38

I recently decided I wanted to write little ficlets using an OC I have created for One Piece. The main reason I'm doing this is because I very much love this character and won't be able to fully use her, meaning I won't be able to show her stuff... and I've come up with a lot of stuff for her. lol. So, I took a list of prompts that I found online and am going to be writing a ficlet for each one, primarily focusing on this character and her relationship with Marco the Phoenix. I may or may not throw her with other characters (for convenience sake, or to be smart and show other sides of her), but I don't know yet. These are very short, almost drabble-size, but I have fun with them. ;) So, here's the the first of will (hopefully) be thirty prompts with the character, Anne.

Prompt: Child

"I lived a very blessed childhood," she confided early one morning, between shifts. One part of the crew was going to bed, while another part was just getting up. They were alone on the deck, with only the sea to hear them.

"Don't sound like you wanted it," Marco commented loosely, leaning against the railing that was so often his perch.

"I don't like being told what my future should be. My parents wanted the best for me, like any parents would, but my mother's decisions were based on social standing, not happiness."

"Were you in good social standing?"

"I was a noble, of the highest family on my island," Anne admitted, never taking her eyes from the horizon. Marco's eyebrows shot up, he couldn't deny. He'd suspected her of being of high status, but hadn't quite expected that level. Anne glanced at him and quickly turned her gaze back to the ocean. "I wasn't happy there."

He cleared his throat. "So you left."

"Wouldn't you?"

Marco thought back to his own childhood. He'd grown up on an impoverished island, barely managing to keep alive as he grew into a young man. He loved his parents, but knew they would have been better off (if only slightly) if they hadn't had to take care of him. He was of the lowest social status where he lived. Marco hated it; wanted more for himself than to barely get by on nothing. He had the feeling Anne was the same in a way. He suspected she wanted to feel as though she'd accomplished something of importance in her life, just like he did.

Marco smirked. "Yeah."
