RIP Harvey Pekar

 Harvey Pekar died at the age of 70, he was a cancer survivor and had a brilliant, if relatively uncelebrated, career as a comic book writer.  His book Our Cancer Year was easily the most honest and brilliant graphic novel about cancer ever written.

Letterman always seemed to attract those interesting left-field guests - amusingly, Leno's ratings are currently lower than they were for Conan O'Brien at the same time last year. I think people do respond to artistic integrity, albeit sometimes much delayed, and that's why we need people like Harvey to produce non-mainstream but essentially honest pieces of work.

actually I've never like Jay Leno... he doesn't have many comedians on his show (I think he knows he suffers by comparison). Letterman does find a lot of off beat types, and he 'discovered' Harvey Pekar long before the movie was made about him.... Letterman is kind of intrigued by weirdos (which is one of the things I love about his show, the weird).
