The professors in the Russian department are, really, some of the nicest and most helpful people I've met so far at Bryn Mawr. I spent most of the Tea today talking with Sharon Bain about languages and majors/minors, and she basically said that minoring in Russian is not outside the realm of possibilities even though I haven't taken the class yet. And I watched her and Tim Harte sing poorly along to a Russian satire-pop music video and oh my God oh my God s-so beautiful.
Its a pretty interesting contrast to my History adviser, who spent most of our meeting looking really, really bored as I asked him questions. Nice fellow, but still.
And now, time for class selection for spring 2011! My life is riveting, I know.
Introduction to German Studies (TTh 9:45-11:15) - basically Advanced German part II, with Imke Meyer, automatically making it better than Advanced German part I.
Vienna 1900 (Th 1-4) - I want this class like burning. 300 level German class. Vienna. YOU ACTUALLY GO TO FUCKING VIENNA and intense research project and VIENNA, AUSTRIAN HISTORY, TURN OF THE CENTURY EUROPE, SNOBBERY AND DECADENCE ABOUND ~
Chekov: Stories and Plays (TTh 11:15-12:45) - No lie, 90% of this is to fangirl Tim Harte. But also Russian plays and short stories (contradiction, I know)
Russian Memoirs (MW 1-2:30) - A half-semester class, which should prove interesting, with Sharon Bain. She was so happy and fangirly about it and dude. We read the memoir of a female Russian soldier during the Napoleonic Era. And a Gulag actress. I. I frankly don't know what to make of that, its so awesome.
Perhaps my sister's does have a point when she says something is wrong with me for wanting to study Nazis and Communists >.>
