Journeys into Amazing Caves

Jul 09, 2007 20:57

So I too have been a bit of a hermit when it comes to LJ. It seems it's going around. It means that I haven't had the usual banter with some of my favorite people. Alas, would that real life would be awesome. Then again, I still get three to four days of ultimate frisbee, so I'm feeling quite good about life. I've even dropped a few inches off the old engineer's belly. That felt nice.

So, it's been a while since I posted a debate/discussion topic, so here's a new one.

A reminder of the rules:

Be nice.
Be cool.
Don't be a jackass.

Other rules:

If you feel comfortable with it, please introduce yourself and tell a little about your own religious beliefs or political affiliations if you feel that it contributes to your view point.
If you have strong feelings about opposing or alternate beliefs/viewpoints, please don't flame, but try to give a respectful explaination of what has influenced your opinions and beliefs.
If you have links to papers, articles, other things that you feel might be related, please do link, it adds flavor.

Today's topic of debate:

Appearance and Judgement.

The last few topics have been losely related around this subject. Hopefully this incarnation will be a little less personal than the media portrayal of women one.

You all might recall the terrible horrible awful no good very bad weekend. So, I've been forced to start the process of buying a new car. I've known for a while that I want my next car to be a hybrid, and we've owned Hondas and Acuras for the past 15 years. So, the Civic Hybrid seems to be the natural choice. All that was left was the test drive.

So, on the Fourth Of July, I head down to the local Honda dealer to try and take a test drive. It was about a bazillion degrees, so I threw on some cargo shorts and a t-shirt and sandals and headed out the door. I went to the front desk and said I was interested in a test drive. I was told that all the reps were busy with customers, but I could feel free to take a look around and the next available rep would be with me.

So, I went and walked the lot, looked at the cars, looked at the stickers, and then waited around for someone to help me. I waited for maybe 20-30 minutes. Then I walked out, after watching people who walked in after me be helped. I don't think I spent more than 30 minutes total at the dealer.

Now, I should mention that when I walked in, there were about 10 sales in progress, and I'm fair certain I saw at least 3 more start. I should have known from the moment I walked in that I wasn't going to be helped. Some of you know what I look like. I'm a pretty scruffy looking 20something. I walk in alone wearing shorts and sandals. Doesn't take a genius to know that I'm not there to buy on the spot.

I don't think that I was racially discriminated against or anything. But, I still get the feeling that some kind of judgement was passed when I walked in the door. No one was particularly eager to help me, and I didn't really go out of my way to bug anyone (then again, I don't know who I would have bugged, everyone seemed genuinely busy). I went across town to a slightly more upscale dealership and was helped almost immediately. The other guys didn't seem to do nearly the same volume as the original deal.

So, the point of this little story? Have you ever felt that you've been judged on your appearance in any way? Do you think it was a fair judgement? Did it hurt? Were you offended? Did it change the way you deal with other people? Do you think you're ever seriously guilty of the same kind of offense?

Discuss!!!

In other news:

I've had a plot bunny or two hopping around in my brain. Anyone interested in an Inuyasha how the series ends fic or Ah! My Goddess Urd/Shohei fanfic?

I've started Escaflowne. It's pretty good. I started this after finishing Scrapped Princess, which I also liked. Shannon Casul is made of awesome. I might need to make him a userpic... but that would mean dropping one. Hmmm... maybe not.

Anyone have any other anime recs?

My wand and golden snitch came. They are much fun to play with. Now, where is that blasted tie... the one that's only 52" and may not fit properly... bugger.

See you folks at Keplers.
