On a desolate winter morning of heavy traffic, dirty streets and bleak horizons, somehow the news that Mary Cheney, famously lesbian daughter of the American VP, is pregnant with her partner - damn it, wife! - of 15 years is a sign of unexpected hope. I mean, I know she's like a bigwig with AOL, and so can afford it, and could have easily afforded it before now: but if a republican lesbian from Virginia can make the news with her same-sex pregnancy, maybe in another fortnight of years attitudes will have changed all the more. Remaking republican america from within.
