I came across a post on Tumblr, which was a photo-set consisting of the following two pictures:
It's a tip for writers, basically, with regard to characterisation, where one should pick a couple of traits from each table to create a more dynamic character. I applied this to the protagonists of my major stories:
Chemistry
Elisabeth: Ambitious, responsible; stubborn, inhibited
Oliver: Enthusiastic, persistent, passionate; stubborn, obsessive
Second Chance
Avery: Devoted, patient; self-pitying, oversensitive, clingy
Cain: Caring; self-indulging, superficial
Strangeness and Charm
Lisbeth: Imaginative, independent; short-tempered, stubborn, melodramatic
Ethan: Loyal, compassionate; impulsive, inflexible
Sway
Helena: Courageous, witty; materialistic, self-indulging, lazy
Sebastian: Compassionate, patient …
… Then I realised how so many of them are stubborn or inflexible, so … um … yeah. Two of those characters are from the actual series their respective story is based on, and whom I've given expanded roles. I'm kind of glad that I managed to keep some of their "essential" traits, because I'm afraid of derailment when attempting to explore other aspects of a character that isn't given much screen-time. Cain is a bit of a problem, however, because he was presented as such a flat character (i.e., evil! So evil, in fact, that I bet he kicks puppies in his spare time while declaring how cheap life is!) in the film. Though Second Chance is meant to be about how big a jerk he is, I'm setting him up as a tragic jerk, so he has to have some kind of positive aspect to his character that'd make him a bit pitiable -- right?
It also revealed a problem I have with Sebastian from Sway: HE HAS NO FLAWS … unless -- now that I think about it -- being too idealistic is one? I remember that both of them are supposed to be dreamers, like wildly so, and one of the ~lessons is to maintain a healthy balance between real life and fantasy. On one hand, he has the potential of becoming a Manic Pixie Dream Guy, which … meh. I don't know. It's Helena's story more than anything else, and I know it's ~cool to have a shallow love interest. But bleh, it still doesn't feel right to me. Oh, well.
Also, I think sans "courageous", Helena is me. Yeah. Heh.
