What exactly are they teaching children these days? As I was preparing lunch for the small people this past weekend, Rachel came up to me and solemnly announced that Her Teacher Says when it's lunchtime, you should "Eat, Drink, and get Married." It was probably a little wrong of me to think "Hmmm, that third one depends entirely on what is being eaten and drunk, and in what quantities." I said nothing and laughed with her, and they were both repeating this refrain for the rest of the weekend.
I was merrily (marriedly?) fixing dinner a couple nights ago when Ryan wandered into the kitchen, and was singing the "There was an old lady" song...the one with the fly. So I started singing along...
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed that fly,
Maybe she'll die!
To which Ryan gives me the most scandalized look and says "That's not how it goes!"
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll cry!
I guess nursery rhymes are tamer these days :-)
A bit more
back here.
Halloween went quite well from the children's perspective, though there was a technical glitch. Happily no eggings resulted... I took off half the day Friday. I came home and did a bit of prep work, then went and picked up the small people once I knew his bus would have dropped him off from school. They picked out the art to carve into the pumpkin (ghost!) and they both helped make treat bags. I like to do the treat bags cause that means even the shy little ones get a few pieces of candy, and really...we typically get a lot. When I was just doing the bowl, the big kids would grab handfuls, and the adorable little shy first timers would get like...one tootsie roll. It's better this way. Hubby stayed home and I hit the streets with my Princess and Dragon. I even put on my poofy shirt, a fancy vest, black pants, buckle shoes, and my pirate tricorn. (I was told by one set of the grownups I was the best pirate they'd seen, lol - that wasn't even my *real* pirate costume...except for the hat) Rachel is ever so practical. Once the loot was plundered from a house, she would declare "I'm ready to go to the next place" and go pelting off toward it. I can tell they are getting bigger, they made it much farther this year. Normally we go down to the rear cul-de-sac, come back up and go through the cul-de-sac across from our house, and they start to give out by then. This year we made it all the way up to the main road! I declared it was time to go home once they started to complain that their ToT bags were getting too heavy ;-) Life's hard, yaknow?
At home, we heard that our doorbell had been stuck, and we probably missed our first couple sets of ToTers. Hubby fixed it by banging on it till it unstuck. Since I had the bags sitting on the kids table right behind the sidelight...and the pumpkin lit...this probably represented a disappointment to those unfortunates. We had a few more ring after we got home, and Ryan and Rachel passed out the treats. They of course had gotten a few "previews" as we'd made the treat bags, and they got to select a few things from their haul to devour. Afterwards, they were sent to get PJ's on, and by the time they came back down, Rachel was literally *hopping* with energy. Ryan was noticably amped up, but Rachel was in the grips of a mad sugar buzz. After letting them bounce off the walls a while, they were dispatched to watch a movie and come off their high.
Other than that it was a pretty quiet weekend :-) But there was a lot of sugar involved all weekend long.
Rachel did get in trouble at school for biting another child. While apparently said child was bothering her and throwing woodchips in her hair, we had a good long talk about no biting, she was forbidden any treats for a while, and (it needed to be done anyway, plus it gave a chance to drive home a point) she lost a lot of her toys. (Don't tell her, they were too young for her for the most part, but they were *hers*) Her room looks a lot better now :-)
This weekend, we have the grandma coming - should be fun for all! "Pick up your toys!" "No!" "Please pick up your toys!" "No!" "Please pick up your toys so it looks nice for Grandma!" "Ok."
