I have discovered a way to motivate myself: make a daily list. I take my small whiteboard and write a list of things I need to do and things I want to do on it, then check off each item as it's finished. They may be small items like "email Mom" or "make iced tea" or bigger ones like "clean the kitchen." This keeps me going for three reasons.
One: it's somehow satisfying to check off an item, and even more so to look at the list at the end of the day and see a row of checkmarks.
Two: I can look at the list during the day and see how much I have left and how much time I need to allot to finish things.
Three: if I try to sit down and slack, having the list staring at me reminds me that I still have stuff to do and I need to go do it.
Item three also applies to taking care of myself. If I add "eat" and "take a walk" to my list, it encourages me not to forget.
This is probably not an exciting revelation to anyone but me. It also probably says something about my relative age that this is exciting.
just stuff,
