The Pink Cat Hat - Part 1

Mar 17, 2010 18:45

So I thought it would be cool to suddenly and unexpectedly start working on that ridiculously pink hat that I was thinking of for my niece. I finally settled on Kat Coyle's Double Cap. On my Ravelry page, I call it the Pink Knitty Kitty... here, it is The Pink Cat Hat. What do I know? Why is it a double cap? Why is DST kicking my patootie so hard?!?!

Ahem.

Here I will document some of my process, so I can remember fondly (or look back in horror) how this all worked out. Still pretty high level... I think I just wanted to take some pictures.

First there was the knitting. Not too much detail to go into here. The usual gauge (we'll say I was a good little knitter and this happened as per schedule). After this picture, the weaving in took place.

Note on the needles: They were the only size 8s I had! I got them from my very first trip to a yarn store, Gail Knits out in NV. I know they are for larger knits. It was incredibly annoying to knit such a small thing with them. I'm not sure how they got slightly warped (they are no longer straight). I will get some more needles of normal size!

Then there was the soaking... In Soak! To my surprise and joy, the non-scented Soak was, in fact, non scented. Just natural smells of the yarn, which I could deal with.

The yarn was surprisingly floaty. Not sure why that surprised me.

After this, per Knitty and my friend known as Cherry_Chiicake, I wrapped it up in a thirsty towel to get out much of the excess moisture. Solid!

I think we know what comes next...

While I waited the 15 minutes for the hat to soak, I gathered my supplies: Pins, my Knitpicks interlocking blocking mats I bought quite some time ago for the soon-to-be-first-sweater, and before mentioned thirsty towel. Then I only had 14 more minutes to wait. So I browsed and queued many more Ravelry patterns. Then I had 13 minutes to wait.

ARGH! Please enjoy this nice straight pin close up while we wait! 12 minutes, 58 seconds to go...

Blocking completed, and I was satisfied that, me and my particular way of things. All was right with the world. This lasted maybe an hour, when I freaked out that I just stretched out the hat ribbing!!!

Seriously. Having a Malabrigo hat already, why do I not know these things? To the emergency re-blocking!

A bit better, though being the particular me that I am, still rather unhappy about it all and keep messing with it. I messed with it at least 3 more times while entering this into Flickr (if anyone noticed the lighting change between this picture and the one before it..).

More to come!
