This is winter

Jan 06, 2009 19:24

When I woke up this morning just before sunrise it was -20oC. Then the sun came up and the temperature started to rise up. I think it was -10 during the day although it felt warmer in the sun. When I went out in my full winter gear that I took from the closet after it spent there 4 years (last time we had real winter) I was even a bit overheating in the sun. Of course then the sun disappeared before 4 p.m. and it got colder by the minute. It's -15 outside now and it's going to be another really cold night.

This of course got all the old people talking about  the winters of old when it was -25 during day. And in the 16th century people crossed Baltic in sledges. But the good all times are all gone now. Tomorrow evening comes snow. The weather turns from siberian to atlantic and at the end of the week there are to be plus temperatures during day. Just 4 days of serious cold. Ah, the Global Warming.

I read about one parent saying that at least his 4 year old can learn what the snow is and enjoy sledging. Last winter snow lasted one evening and all they could do was to make a snowman and put it in the freezer to show her. There have been broken tracks and buses that couldn't start but all schools are on and everyone is expected to come to work. I remember being envious as a kid of those places (like France or England or so many parts of US) where just a little snow and bit of cold is enough to have a day off. Here you are suppose to come snowstorm or not.

COUNTDOWN:
There are just two weeks left to my defence.
I got one review already and I know the questions from the other.
Now is the time to start last preparations. Should I start to panic, already?
