io9 made a list of the upcoming SFF movies that are not sequels/prequels/remakes and there's quite a lot of them actually. Some of them are only in the planning stages (and in case of Neuromancer and Snow Crash there's been rumours about filming them forever) but so was Ender's Game for years and it's actually filming now. So let's pretend they

*reads through list* Almost all of them could be titled "dudes do shit" I am so tired of SF/F movies being all about dudes doing shit.

That's one of things that always makes me unsatisfied as the movies (even within the genre) that have women doing things are the ones that tell stories I'm least interested in. Almost all are about romances and which guy to pick. I want action and future and robots and spaceships. The fact that no one makes movies like Moon or District 9 with women is depressing. And when the movie actually has female protagonist she's the only one in the cast. Argh.

I hope that if Snow Crash succeeds they will film The Diamond Age. I hope Katniss and Merida will mean some more female based casts and stories. Without romance being the centre of their existence.
