Caprica cyberpunk

I've been watching Caprica and I'm liking it more and more with each episode. I was not convinced at first - watching the old men angst (or woman for that matter) is not what I want in my sci-fi and I had enough of this with the other Adama. Also Greystone company problems don't really interest me. But then there are all those cool techs, nascent AIs and copying personalities.

I admit that I stuck with the few first episodes because I loved the visuals. Caprica is so pretty - from the designs of buildings to lightning, from the various virtual worlds to the overused by promos Alessandra Torresani. BTW I love the switching from the Zoe perspective where she perceives herself as she looked as human to the actual robot body she is in and back. This makes one understand why the cylons became interested in getting human bodies in the first place.

Then there is that thing that can make me stick with almost anything - the relation between us and the others, the aliens, the AIs. How we treat them, when we consider them equal or they us and the consequences of miscalculating. I liked how they showed how the personal failings of the couple of people can screw things up for everyone. The  way both Daniel and Joseph reacted to the virtual incarnations of their daughters was understandable. This is where the uncanny valley can hit you hard - so close to the loved one but not real, not the kind of real you are used to. But what happens then is where the things go really wrong. Because treating them as fake can has serious consequences when the virtual reality is getting more and more interconnected with the real life. And what Daniel did was really wrong because he believed she was real and he still treated her like an object to use to get what he wanted. He used the magnificent work of his daughter, her copy sell his product. I'm with Zoe on not giving him anything more. She trusted him once and the betrayal was was of the kind that discourages from ever trusting again. Unfortunately Zoe seems to always trust the wrong people. Well - except  Lacey. And I think that Daniel deserves whatever Tomas Vergis is planning for him. Everything that the cylon is was stolen from someone more better.

I liked how Joseph understood his mistake and tries to make up for it. After all that is that is left of his daughter and, no matter what is his worldview, it's still better then nothing. I think I start to like Joseph Adama most of the "parent" generation. Yes, more then his brother. Yes, Sam is cool and the whole tattooed gangster with male spouse is awesome but I still think he is bad influence.

I find Sister Clarice fascinating, despite her being everything I dislike, her ultimate goal is something I could sing for. Funny how I'm rooting for her to fail and at the same time want her to succeed. On the other hand I know how badly it ends so I think I just don't want her to get Zoe's avatar. I hope that Barnabas doesn't get her either. I also dislike how Clarice uses people - her family, Amanda - making them care and then use them for her goals.

Of the main heroes I like Zoe and Lacy most. Oh, they can be annoying teenagers sometimes but they can be brilliant too. I loved Zoe showing her geeky side, the way she got really passionate when she talked about her ideas, and I loved that it got Philomon all turned on. I love how stubborn and dedicated she is. The kind of person who always gets what she wants.  and I hope she'll keep beating Daniel in his mind games. I like Lacy even more because she is shy and not a genius and she is teenager and she plans to steal a military secret project and transport it to another planet without letting anyone know what it really is.

And, of course, then there was the crowning moment of awesome when Tamara learned how to use her superpowers and went all Neo on the Game. And then she did the Six walk. and I was sold. I understand that they don't want to overuse that but I hope will see her soon again.

I try not to think about BSG at the moment because it makes me think about stuff like how Zoe and Tamara die - they wasn't there among the human cylons - and why are Billy Adama's eyes not blue. This is the problem with prequels - so many ways to contradict what was previously established.
