Title: Nighttime Awakenings
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~500
Disclaimer: I can only fantasize that this is really going on. Alas, it's not. Unless it is, and if so, I want photographic evidence, dammit!
Summary: Jared and Jensen talk about who gets to do the midnight feedings.
A/N 1: I desperately needed some schmoop after finishing my Prison Break marathon earlier, and somehow this drabble came out, based on a line from the finale. It's un-beta'd and was written quickly.
A/N 2: Part of Ella!verse, but I don't think you have to read that first.

When they first start talking about adopting a baby, Jensen insists that he won’t get up to take care of the night feedings. It doesn’t surprise Jared too much really. Jensen loves his sleep and is dead to the world until you force him up and give him some coffee.

“I promise to keep your side of the bed warm until you come back, though,” Jensen tells him with a smirk.

Jared growls and rolls on top of Jensen on the couch, pinning his hands over his head and nuzzling his cheek. “It’s much more fun if we keep the sheets warm together,” Jared murmurs.

“Dork.” Jensen arches under him, his breath quickening. “I’m still not getting up during the night, no matter what you do with your tongue.”

“Uh-huh.” He slides a palm down Jensen’s chest to the hardening bulge in his shorts. “You’ll just have to make it up to me somehow.”

Jensen squirms and rocks his hips. “I’m sure you’ll think of something.”

“Possibly.” He squeezes his hand, just to listen to Jensen whimper, then bends his head to kiss Jensen.

“Still not getting up,” Jensen insists again, lips catching on Jared’s with each word.

Jared doesn’t care, honestly. He’s just happy to have a family with Jensen.

Several months later, they bring Ella home. If either of them sleeps that night, it’s only for minutes at a time. They’re exhausted and overwhelmed and so beyond happy. They should get some rest while they can, but neither of them can stop watching Ella sleep. She’s been restless, fussing a lot for no reason. Jared knows that’s normal, that babies cry and it’s okay, but he still worries. If Jensen hadn’t stopped him, Jared would’ve called his mama half a dozen times by now.

“She’s so beautiful,” Jensen whispers, his voice just as full of awe now as it was in the hospital when he first held Ella.

“Yeah.” It’s somewhere around 3 a.m., and Jared’s too tired for coherent speech right now.

Jensen reaches over to where Ella’s lying between them on their big bed, running a hand along her cheek. His hand looks huge next to her tiny face. They gave up on keeping her in the crib early on in the night. With how often they were going into her room, it was just easier this way.

“Hey, Jay?”

“Hmm?” Jared rolls over to face Jensen and props himself up on an elbow. He can barely make Jensen out in the dark. He’s mostly indistinct shadow, but Jared doesn’t need light to know Jensen’s face. He memorized everything about Jensen a long time ago.

“I changed my mind.”

“You want to give her back?” Jared jokes. He also doesn’t need light to know when Jensen’s rolling his eyes.

“About getting up at night,” Jensen continues. “I don’t think I’m gonna mind so much.”

Jared’s heart hitches with love, for Jensen and Ella. Carefully, he leans over and kisses Jensen. It lands at
an awkward angle on Jensen’s jaw, but he still feels Jensen’s mouth twitch into a smile.

“Don’t worry, Jen. I’ll keep your side of the bed warm till you come back.”
