We say things that we don't mean.
The reason why is because of fear.
Fear of reputation being damaged.
Fear of isolation...

One may say they may adopt a child.
However when one jokes that may be an adopted child, it is a joke because we look down on the adopted. We feel we are better because we have relatives. We're not isolated like "them".
