The cat has developed an interesting way of signalling that she is about to be sick - she sort of howls, but rolls it around in her mouth. Sort of a mumbled yodel: "Mommy, I don't feel good!" Usually gives me time to escort her to an easily-cleaned surface - i.e., the kitchen floor. (Sometimes I luck out, and can position her directly over the kitchen bin for maximum ease of clean-up, but she doesn't like that and desperate clawing ensues - the timing has to be right for that to work.)
We've been giving her subQ fluids since just before her 18th birthday (or what we understand her 18th birthday to be), and it's really made a difference. Perked her right up. She even has enough energy that she's started visiting her special secret spot in the basement again, which maybe isn't such a good thing. See, I know where the spot is. I'm just not sure how accessible she'd be, if she became direly ill (or even
cacked it) while in said spot.
Obviously she doesn't care for getting poked once a day, but appears to have developed a resigned attitude (with the occasional bout of sullen rebellion) towards the process - sits quietly while the fluid goes in. Luckily our bathroom has a sink that is beautifully suited for the purposes of containing a cat - she used to sleep in it, years back. Will probably not be listed as a selling point when we unloadsell this dump fine residence, but it's been very handy. Of course, eventually the fluids won't help her anymore. :(
