Two Mehs and a Way Cool

Went to the Guggenheim today, and I'm sure it says something about me that I like the building more than most of the art inside. Then, in search of a coffee and croissant place recommended by a very nice museum guard, I happened quite by accident upon the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum. I was intrigued... and then the fact that they were having and exhibit on felt completely drew me in.

Yes, felt! Fibery goodness! An ottoman knitted with 2-inch thick rope (the needles are I'm guessing 4 feet long). The upstairs exhibit was examples of children's wallpaper and books, which is not nearly as boring as it sounds. And best of all, that museum was once the home of Andrew Carnegie, and it was beautiful. The gift shop I think used to be his library, and the conservatory on the east side of the building? I could have stayed in there for hours, reading or knitting.

Then, dinner and a bartender who knew how to make a Vodka Pres (and asked me why someone so young even knows that drink!).

With no specific plan, I decided on theater for the evening's festivities. Should have researched my options... there was no real information at the TKTS booth, other than cost and where the seats were. If they had told me that Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen were in "Impressionism" nothing would have kept me away. Instead, I decided on "Wicked" because I absolutely loved the book, and of course, this show gets *raves*.

No disrespect intended to the people who love this show, nor to the players in it (who were fabulous) but I was completely underwhelmed. How do you turn that perfect, pointed book into the pat little show I saw tonight? Theatricality! Sequins! Uplights! Flying Monkeys! (All I could think of was the Juul Haalmeyer Dancers, and you get a gold star if you know who they are.)

Anyway, I don't mean to sound cranky but it was an expensive disappointment.

Eastoning tomorrow....
