Time flies

I'm a little tired of snow and winter, but at least I've been busy and that always helps pass the time.

While I haven't gotten a lot of writing done, I finally did some revision work on my novelette, For the Love of Trees, after procrastinating for a while because I wasn't sure how to solve some problems. I feel like I'm on the right track; I just need to stop procrastinating.

But if I wasn't already procrastinating enough writing projects, I think I'm going to start a new novel. Yes, I have a completed and somewhat revised manuscript of a novel that needs serious work and yes, I've been dragging my feet on it. But I'm at the point with The Willow Maiden that I've had enough of it critiqued and grown enough as a writer since writing that first draft that I don't think having other people look at it and then rewriting based on their comments is going to help me at this point. I know what needs doing.

But I need something to take to the TNEO workshop this summer. So, a few new short stories. But wait! What about that cool dream I had about [mumble mumble] that I thought could draw upon a greatly fictionalized version of [the life of a little-known composer] only it would need to be in a secondary world because [mumble mumble]...

So I'm now in the "research phase." I know the basic plot outline and it's cool because it's sort of an anti-romance. I've got a lot of work to do to build a world that makes sense.

In other news, Stephan and I are going to Costa Rica in June. I've been reading books and websites and am so excited that I wish we were going next week. We absolutely loved Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii. So next stop, Arenal Volcano! Not to mention the beaches, birds, monkeys, birds, cloud forest, birds, and did I mention birds?

Here's a couple of guys that have travel videos on tips for visiting Costa Rica that are much more helpful than what I've read in any number of guides: Doin' Costa Rica with D'Angelo and Michael Alan

And as a somewhat random couple of links, in the past few days I've become obsessed with houses constructed from old shipping containers. Really, it's a great way to recycle and get a quick house. And, hello, FEMA, they claim these are quick to set up and hurricane-proof.

This company in Costa Rica makes them and there's a link to donate to give them as shelters in Haiti. Now I haven't done all the research to verify that the company is really doing this and that it's helping, but it sounds like a really cool idea. Container Homes in Costa Rica

This guy in the U.S. makes some more elaborate ones: Quik House.

Enjoy!
