NYC day 5

Sunday in NYC

Sunday was BC/EFA Fleamarket day! We also were rushing for The Color Purple but the line isn’t as crazy as Spring Awakening is so we showed up at 10 for tickets that went on sale at 12 and were just at the corner of the building. Perfect :) So we had breakfast in line, bought tickets, and then went to the Fleamarket. First stop was the BC/EFA table for Ava to get a DVD she missed last year and then we went to the TDF pick a ticket table but it was empty. We found out later that tickets had sold out in less than 2 hours! That would have been a madhouse table, even more so than the RENT costumes I bet LOL. So then we just wandered everything. Grey Gardens of course had a fantastic table as they’d just recently closed. I found a copy of the TV movie ‘The Dreamer of Oz’ which made my day. I picked up a couple of other things as gifts and such and took pictures of fun and random things. After lunch I got into the huge autograph line for the last group of people which included Bernadette Peters. There was a sign up saying they’d cut the line off at 3 but no one ever came to cut it off so I decided I was staying in line until someone told me there was no shot. I made it to about 5 people from the section where you pay and therefore will surely get your autograph and they cut off the line :( But then they said they’d do photos with Bernadette as a special thing so myself and another woman I’d met in line went over to the madness that was the line up for photos with Bernadette. I think had prices stayed fixed at $10 for a photo I’d have never got in but they raised prices to $40 for photos with Bernadette and a lot of people left and the guy running that line let the last group of us through phew! You had a choice to do a picture on your own camera or have them take a Polaroid. I chose my own camera but the picture didn’t turn out well (although I’m going to play with it in photoshop and see if it’s fixable) so they did a second shot with the Polaroid camera which worked out well. Bernadette was so sweet and friendly to everyone and I was thrilled to get to have a picture taken with her. It totally made the long long wait worthwhile.

After that I met back up with Julie and Ava who had been patiently waiting for me to get through that line up and we went to relax in the Mariott Marquis hotel lounge. Very lovely! I really would like to stay at that hotel one day. Then we had time for dinner (at which we saw Deborah Monk) and then went to see The Color Purple. Ava and Julie had seen it before but wanted to see Fantasia as she was getting great reviews. I wasn’t sure about Fantasia being in the show but I wanted to see the show and thought I could try to overlook her if she wasn’t that good. Fantasia is completely deserving of her great reviews. She blew me away. She has a lot of natural raw talent and her voice worked perfectly for her role. I was just stunned by how good she was! I had the most annoying people next to me (they talked and ate through the whole show and anytime I looked over at them they just talked about how “that girl is looking at me again” so I gave up and did my best to ignore them) and yet for most of the time I was completely engrossed in what was going on on stage. The show itself is so moving. I cried at a lot of it. It’s fantastic and very much worth seeing.

That was the end of the weekend, back to work the next day for Ava and Julie, back to random NYC touristy stuff for me.
