If I'd done something like that kid did, and refused to listen to my parents, they wouldn't have just taken me home -- they'd have tanned my hide right there in the store. Not only would I have never done that again, but no other kid in that store would have, either. Grrrr....
I believe the Return to Oz cartoon played on TV in the late 70's, just once or twice; that's the last time, as far as I remember. Have you seen any of the Oz Kids videos? Definitely made for kids, but interesting in that some of the characters from the other books are mentioned. They're really pretty good; just slow moving.
As a former X-Men comic collector, I was so deliriously happy to see all the characters I remembered that I didn't even notice the quality of the dialogue ... guess that was a good thing. I think the movie moved so fast that the writing probably got by everyone, except for reviewers and other writers. I'm sure it could have used some Joss-injection, but I believe he's been busy with the Wonder Woman script for some time now.
Um ... anyone brave enough to tell me what an Oozenator is?
Did you ever wonder how many of those toy makers and advertisers lock themselves in their office and giggle uncontrollably about getting away with that stuff? Do you suppose it's the same people who invented the Harry Potter vibrating broomstick? That had to make some kids happy ...

It's supposed to be a zoom effect or something, to give the allusion of flying, which probably did make some girls fly in a way they didn't expect. Then there was the vibrating Jar-Jar Binks doll that caused a similar controversy sometime back ...
It reminds me of how happy I was as a kid to find an old stick in the back yard that was the perfect shape to be my machine gun for playing war. Heaven forbid kids today should use their imagination ...
Oh, yeah! We didn't get new large items often, but when we did those cardboard boxes were good for miles of fun. A blanket and two chairs made the best tent, and the floor of fine dirt in our barn was good for earth moving, city building, oceans, or all manner of battlefields. A mop handle without the mop on it was perfect to be a muzzle loading rifle, the ditch near our house was a river worthy of Tom Sawyer, and our video game console was a model starship being sailed by hand past the dark blue wall of my room.
