I completely agree with you.

If someone wants a certain picture I used for an icon or whatnot, I'll gladly share it. Isn't that what the internet-and LJ, more specifcally-is all about? Sharing, and being friendly?

*shakes head at some people*

Exactly, the internet gives everyone the ability to get more information. We can now find pictures that appeared in newspapers from the other side of the world. Why hoard that? Also when I see people doing that I just want to ask if they would have enjoyed having the person who gave them the info to have been all self rightious about it and refused to share. Clearly they got the benifit of sharing, so they can share too, it's kindergarten people, if a five year old can master it I'm sure you can too :)

Okay, I know this wasn't your point, but now I kind of want to make some Seasme Street icons that say 'The Internet is for Sharing'.

I need help.

I don't get why websites disable the right-click option. First of all, it's convenient, and not always for "stealing images", which is what the purpose of disabling it seems to be. Secondly, if I really wanted to "steal" an image, I'll just view the page source and find out what it is there.

*begin geeky rant*
Some people are also anal about defending their HTML code - as if they're the only person ever in the history of the internet to use mouseovers or something. People borrow code; it's a fact of life. If I've got a JavaScript image preloader that works really well, I surely expect someone else to come along and take it. Just like I'm pretty sure I got it (and likely tweaked it to my own specifications) from someone else's website years ago. I wouldn't have even gotten into web design 10 years go had I not borrowed other website code and played around with it to teach myself how to do things. Frustrating!
*end geeky rant*

In closing, you're SO RIGHT!!!

Oh the disabling of the right click, I forgot to add that one. I also don't like that. Especially as it seems that most people who use it are posting pictures of tv shows or celebrities or artwork that they like, not anything that actually belongs to them.... so trying to claim that they own it or have any right to be the only person who has it is just silly.

I haven't done any web design stuff really so I didn't realize that people also claimed ownership to html coding or any type of coding.

Once it's on the internet it's generally up for grabs. When people pitch a fit about someone using "their" pictures or programs etc they just are wasting their energy.

WORD.

So aggravating. It seems more and more people are doing #1 more and more often. I understand that we don't all save the links, but if it's only one pic, you know better than others what the link it. It's so time-consuming. Especially when I really want that picture!! Stupid X-files...

As for ownership, anything you post is fair-game IMO. Sad but true.

What's the link the the Xfiles icons?

and yeah if it's online then people will take it. And really, when it's not your own artwork then you have no claim to it so why keep it from other people?

Absolutely gorgeous icons. And it only took a little bit of prodding, but once again, no direct link.

Albeit, some sites don't like people directly linking to them, I guess for bandwidth reasons, but linking isn't that bad. It's not like hotlinking the picture itself. Meh....

It doesn't help that the site doesn't work though. At least not on my computer...

But also, it's good that it didn't take like 10 ten people asking the same question before she responded with teh first answer. So, I've gotta give her credit for that. She's on top of responding, :) Unlike other people I've seen in various fandoms.
