Ownership on the internet

I have been getting more and more annoyed lately with the sense people have that they own things on the internet. In so many fandoms I'll see someone post a wallpaper or an icon or a banner... just a graphic of some kind.... and use some "rare" pictures. Then when people ask where those pictures came from they conviently forget OR flat out refuse to share.

Unless you were the photographer it's not your picture. If you found it on the internet then clearly someone is sharing it, you benefitted from that, so pass on the good fortune.

Even if you can't remember the site where the picture came from did you not save it to your computer to use it in your artwork? And do you not post said artwork online indicating that you have a host site somewhere... so can't you just host the picture to share it?

Secondly the people who post graphics and then have huge "DO NOT TAKE THIS PICTURE" warnings slapped all over. I get that you worked on it. If it's private, keep it off of the internet because you can't possibly expect everyone who stumbles across your work to respect your wishes. What gets me most is when I've seen icon makers do this and then give their reasons as they're either applying for or in a graphic design program and the icons are part of their portfolio.

Firstly, that's a weak portfolio then because you're producing work that a 14 year old with photoshop can do. It may be great work, but it's not uniquely good. Secondly, if it really is that important then don't post it in a public place on the internet. If you need the work for school then resist showing it off and make other icons that people can take.

It's the internet, you don't own what you find and you can't protect what you post..
