The Problem of Jane and Other SC Rambles

Dec 09, 2008 17:01

Anybody who's read SC knows what The Problem of Jane is.  At least, I hope so.  Because nearly everyone threw screaming fits over her - not because they thought she was badly-written (thank heavens!) but because they thought she was bloody annoying.

Well, she was bloody annoying, and I rather meant her to be, but . . . there wasn't any way to really ( Read more... )

Wow... Jane's last phrase is... certainly effective! She doesn't sound quite right in the head, of course, to me, but I'm very different personality wise, so it's just as well. O.O I suspect I will find her annoying this time, too. (not that I think this is a bad thing, if the character itself is the one provoking it and not the author).

About not getting other characters' povs, and only getting an inkling about all other stories below/behind the story, personally is one of the things I like the most. It really is a treat when a story is written like that, it gives it a certain depth or realism that makes it more enjoyable for me.

Though I have noted lately that in ff people tend to resent it. In general they prefer to have all povs, all the time. I don't get it, but well.

I've bookmarked the delicious account! Read the last JA fic bookmarked already (Sealed in WaxI wouldn't have imagined as a favourite of yours if I had found it some other way, though, it surprised me! Darcy's characterization, in particular, struck me as ( ... )

I suppose that's really the thing - I mean, as an author, whether I'm writing an annoying character or whether things just happen that I don't mean to. That's how the 'shadow story' really was in old!SC - I had not the slightest idea what was going on w/ Jane, except that she was sending money to Kitty and otherwise sticking her head in the sand. And I was surprised, because I didn't really expect anyone to care. I certainly didn't ( ... )

Romantic suspense! That was the word I was looking for last night. That's way I think that to have every pov is to ruin the story. Not even Austen, who delighted in writing a lot of povs, made the mistake of ruining romantic suspense by giving us the two principal povs when the outcome was uncertain (as uncertain it can be on her novels, but well ( ... )

I've been reading SC and many of your other lovely stories over at austen.com and ff.net and I just had to stop by and tell you how much I've enjoyed your work. Your AU adaptations are just fascinating. I love how very carefully you depict the way tiny (or huge!) differences in canon would affect the plot and characterizations. You do a great job of taking the canon characters and then saying, "What if this happened instead? How would that affect their character development ( ... )

Oh! Thank you! That is, of course, the idea (and my whole theory of how-to-write-fanfic, lol), but I'm always delighted when somebody thinks, seriously, that I've succeeded!

The new version of SC is here: http://sites.google.com/site/subsequentconnections/

If you're of age, you'll probably want to register at http://meryton.com/aha - there are a lot of stories there, including some of mine that aren't posted at DWG (where the inability to keep comment threads or edit chapters can get very annoying).

You're quite welcome, and I hope you enjoy the new SC!

Thank you for the links! I've been running out of stories to read over at austen.com, and ff.net is like the Pit of Despair sometimes! ;-) It helps to know where the good stuff is posted.

And thanks again for the fantastic stories!

ff.net is *totally* the Pit of Despair! :D

You're quite welcome, as always, of course. Though these days I don't like most things well enough to read, I try to mention those that I do.
