* Saw Sin City the other night. Still not quite sure what i thought of it to be honest. There was quite a bit i did like in it- the production design was amazing, I loved the cinematography and whole "noir" mood they created, the special effects were really well done, and it had an awesome cast.. and yet when we left the theatre i was mostly incredibly fucking pissed off. Mainly because i felt like i'd been sucked in to watching one of the most gratuitously, and at some points sickeningly violent movies i'd EVER seen- yet through clever marketing/ "artistic" license the distributors had somehow got away with an MA rating.
Don't get me wrong- i'm generally pretty anti-censorship. But it pissed me off that there could be horrible violence, especially women getting raped/the shit beaten out of them.. and yet if there'd been one shot of somebody shooting up or full-frontal male nudity it would've been an R for sure. And though i may cop a beating over this from people who maybe got a lot more out of it than i did/don't share my views on violence in film.. ultimately i just felt like it was a clever way of showing a fuckload of half-naked girls mixed with extreme violence purely for entertainment value, and it left me feeling faintly sick.
* We did a drive-by past taronga zoo last night on a late-night whim to have a sticky at the becnleyton festival of tackiness. I especially liked how nova was broadcasting from the zoo.. classy! It was a slightly surreal moment- as we were driving past that the animal sound effects were momentarily stopped on the radio to announce the latest london bombing- yet they then promptly resumed the 'zany wedding' festivities.
