Dimash: Ave Maria

Aug 28, 2021 19:33

I was going to do an actual update, but it'll have to wait. For now, Dimash's third (and final) new piece at New Wave 2021, and I have no words. It's a vocalise performance (that is, it's sung without words), and is... heartstoppingly beautiful.

Igor Krutoy wrote on his Instagram a short essay about happiness, which tied in with how how "AVE MARIA" was born:

"Italians like to say that a composer is worth exactly as much as his last work, ie, all previous successes and achievements do not count... I was very attentive to this rather controversial and categorical statement of representatives of this very musical country ( both in the past and in the present) and I began to consider my new compositions through the prism of Italians... One evening, about three months before the "New Wave", Dimash called me and asked if I could write "Ave Maria " for him, explaining that he wanted to sing something in that style... Coincidentally I had a free evening and I gladly sat down at the piano and, remembering the Italian formula of responsibility, worked with inspiration until I achieved the desired result. . . After taking a few days for the composition to "rest" in my ears, soul and heart, I sent it to Dimash, who literally within half an hour answered that it was exactly what he wanted to hear. And of course, the reception and applause given to Dimash by the audience at the "New Wave" show what a happiness it is to do what I love, to write for such a genius singer, to evoke deep emotion in the audience and to be in demand... Just a short essay on " What is happiness?"

It's often said that the voice is an instrument, and Dimash is definitely one of the people who demonstrate how true this is. I feel he could probably sing [the violin solo] 'The Lark Ascending'.

ETA: This week has just sort of vanished in a blur. I meant to mention somewhere that New Wave is a singing competition, created by Igor Krutoy, and that Dimash was one of the judges this year.
