a little trip into Nostalgialand...

Back in the 6th grade, my class did a weekly Toastmaster's Club thing - in which three or four of us had to give speeches about anything. One of the speeches I sort of recall giving had to do with comics - drawing and such - which, of course, I knew absolutely NOTHING about. All I had to show during my speech is a 12-page book I made. Something about 12 months in the life of some worm. Badly drawn at the time, but I felt damn proud. Where that book is now, I have no idea. I don't recall coming across it in my myriads of boxes.

While that was my first comic book, this is my first 2-page comic strip:

(Apologies for the rather large size...hard to read the text if the image gets smaller)

What was going on for me at the time? Living at home with dad while taking classes at the local branch of SWOCC. I was also on the mend in regards to my dramatic loss of weight - caused by the death of my late grandmother several months earlier.

Sometime during my late middle school years (7th or 8th grade), I came across a cartoon in one of my grandparent's magazines. In the cartoon, two beavers are looking at a chainsaw - which has been used to cut down some trees in their forest. One beaver says to the other, "It don't talk much, but it sure can chew!" For the longest time, I drew that cartoon whenever I got bored - eventually to the point where I just drew the beavers in the margins of my schoolwork. A classmate soon took notice of my drawings of the cartoon and the beavers themselves and came up with this:

Somehow I find it hard to believe it's been over 10 years since this drawing was done.
