SYTYCD Top 18

So this week went a little better.

So just to get it out of the way, wah, I don't want Stanley gone. I didn't expect Teddy to actually fall to the bottom, and was optimistic until Nigel pulled the rug out from under me. Phooey. I liked Jourdan as a dancer and it's certainly not all her fault, but yeah, that partnership with Marquet was not working.

I changed it to "a little better" up above, from "better," because looking back at the routines on Youtube, I realized how many routines I did not remember and how many I outright did not like. Why do I keep forgetting Brooklyn and Casey? They are honestly like a blank hole in my memory. Poor Jacque and Zach, on the other hand, just got lost being there at the beginning, I think. I place my unhappiness with Emily and Teddy's routine on Tyce, because it really was the choreo that bugged me. Tanisha and Rudy though, well, again with the prop all the way through not doing favors, but while Tanisha did just fine, I still need to drop-kick Rudy with his flailing and lack of control. I do not understand at all how that routine keeps ending up at the top/in the favorites of all the reviews of last night I've read. I just don't get it. As for Jessica and Stanley, Misty was right, too much face, especially from Jessica, it kept pulling me out.

Anyway, what I did like!

Best of the night for me were Carly and Serge. And that's all on Carly. Fastest turnaround from "who?" to "dayum, yes" since Kathryn. Serge did not keep up with her, but he threw himself in there and she was so righteously earning Luther Brown's joy that I don't care.

Next up, well, I think I'm going to have to accept that they're going to have to fall on their faces for me to not love them. Valerie and Ricky weren't perfect, Mary pointed out the technical bits and good on her for doing so. They radiate such happiness, though. The best waltzes on this show are like that -- Kathryn and Legacy, and Amy and Fik-Shun got me in the same place. I also desperately need her dress.

And last, because it also made me smile, are Bridget and Emilio. She was cleaner than he was, which particularly showed in the jive kicks, but they went for it and had fun. Bonus Anya and Pasha is always welcome.

Honorable mention to the group routine. I wasn't surprised when Cat said it was an Academy of Villains piece. This group had NO CHANCE of being as brutally precise as AoV, and Pharside and Phoenix adjusted for contemporary, but I will never object to throwing new choreographers into the mix.
