Matters had conspired to keep Franklin in their reality past dawn, and so it was that sunset had come and the Gargoyles awoke.  Following a simple breakfast, Hudson and Kat, along with Nashville, joined him on the battlements, while the others went about their tasks for the night ( Read more... )

"Sure." Franklin absently rubbed one eye and looked up at the night sky. "I hope everyone's not worried too bad. I tried to go back...."

"Then you are here for some purpose," Katana said. "Such is the way of things. You will return when it is the time to return."

She looked to her son. "You are ready, Nashville?"

The "ten"-year old nodded. "Yeah, Mom."

"Good," she said, "then let us be off."

She was the first off the ramparts, spreading her wings to catch the night air.

Franklin's own takeoff seemed a little kamakaze as he dove steeply and carefully flipped his wings out only after several meters of freefall. He was grinning like a maniac when he straightened out the glide.

Nash and Hudson joined them seconds later. The boy was clearly impressed.

"Whoa!" he said. "You gotta teach me to do that!"

"Goliath." He looked over his shoulder, too fearful to straighten from the crouch he'd ended up in, then gasped as he caught a better look at the gargoyle on the ground and turned back to Katana. "That... that's me!"

No, lad," Hudson said. "That's Thailog."

He and Kat exchanged a look. Franklin was took big a target, especially if Thailog thought he was Goliath, to be sent fleeing, not if Thailog was armed. "Go, lad," Hudson told Nash, who leaped off and back toward the castle.

"Stay here," Franklin," Kat insisted. "We shall deal with him..."

As one, she and Hudson jumped from the roof, wings spread, gliding toward Thailog below.

The big gargoyle put a hand over his mouth and watched fearfully, his prayers growing a little frantic as he hunkered with his free hand on the rooftop in front of him.

-God, please help them stop him.-

Both of them had their swords out as they landed, Kat here katana, Hudson his viking blade. Thailog was ready for that, blades popping out of the gauntlets he wore, forming katars for him to use.

Kat was faster, but lacked his reach and strength. Hudson, closer in size, but diminished by age. Only a few strikes in, and it was already a rough battle.

"Too cowardly to face me, Goliath?" Thailog cackled, as his blade struck out, leaving a shallow gash across Hudson's shoulder, making him drop his sword.

Shod footsteps came from the darkness, and then the human Goliath appeared, his service revolver in his hand and his dark eyes watchful and wary. When he saw Hudson and Katana he quickly put the gun away. "What happened?"

Hudson stares in surprise, but the old warrior is quick on his wits. "We took the lad for a glide with us, but as ye can see, we ran into a spot o' trouble."

Goliath's first impulse was to go for his cuffs, but then he remembered that they were tempered for human strength and scowled. "Thailog."

Thailog turned his attention to this new arrival. "Oh, don't tell me the detective's condition is catching."

"Have you any rope?" Goliath put the gun away but didn't shift his weight from Thailog's neck.

Hudson spied a length of chain piled on the ground. "This looks long and strong enough," he said.

With Franklin's help Thailog was soon trussed up.

Goliath looked up toward the warehouse roof, then remembered himself and looked at his hands ruefully.

"Now somebody needs to take him and hang him upside down from a street light," said Franklin gravely.

"That should not be difficult," Kat replied.

"Take him and stick him in a nexus?" suggested Franklin suddenly.

Goliath blinked and looked at Hudson. He personally liked the idea, but this wasn't his territory.

"'tis not a bad idea, actually," Hudson replied. "A snake such as him, well, he'd wind his way back, but at least we'd have a little piece o' mind..."

"Shall we do it, then?" He looked around at the other gargoyles.
