One of the reasons his monologs were interesting was that he was working things out at as he spoke, or at least giving the illusion of working things out.
I have to imagine him writing the story of his suicide in his head as prepared for it. I think he thought the solution might come to him as he did it. Something profound would happen. A rescue. A chance encounter. Deus Ex Machina. That's how all those stories end, right?
I hate to be trite about it, but don't you think he, of all people, could have talked his way through it?
