Referendum Vote

Sep 25, 2014 09:10

I read the newspaper. Shocking, I know, since paper print news is quickly becoming a thing of the past, which I really do hate. I enjoy reading the editorials, as well as the letters to the editor. Sometimes they make me nod my head, other times they make me wonder how much brain damage the writer has, but nothing annoys me more then someone endorsing or opposing a vote, that as little to do with them.

In this case, it is a Pohatcong resident, urging people to vote no, on the upcoming referendum vote for the PHILLIPSBURG school system. They oppose it because of the use of 10% of the funding to go towards improvements on the new athletic fields. Ok, hold on a second here. You disapprove the addition of parking, stands, a freaking BATHROOM, to the athletic fields? Why? Is it because a sport OTHER than football is being played there? Aren't soccer, field hockey players, lacrosse, softball, and baseball, players allowed to have a place to change and go to the bathroom? Aren't the parents of those athletes entitled to stands to sit on while cheering on their children? A place to use the restroom? A place to park their car? And, maybe, just maybe, get a soda from a small concession stand?

Obviously, you don't have a child in the Phillipsburg School system at the lower levels. Even if you had a child in the high school, because that is where you send your students since you do not have a high school of your own, wouldn't you WANT them to have a decent place to play their chosen sport? Since you do not have a child in the lower grades, specifically grade 1-5, you have no idea what it's like, to have your child in a school, that is over 100 years old, has wonderful teachers, but no facilities to use, a small all purpose room that can't even hold the parents of 1/3 of the 1st graders when there is a performance, let a lone let the kids do actual performances. A school where the cafeteria is so small, they have to rotate out lunches starting at 10:30 in the morning, and this is only for 1/2 of the first and second graders in Phillipsburg! That is because the schools are so old and small, we have to split the them up in different schools to fit!

I understand, you must be mad because we did not ask for your approval for your possible 10% stake in this, which is, wait, none of your risk because you don't pay our taxes! So, your belly aching and opposition to the school referendum is simply a product of today's society, one that says if I can complain about something that has absolutely nothing to do with me, I will do it anyway. Oh, yes, I forgot, you are worried that your tuition to send your students to the high school will go up. Well, guess what, the tuition you pay is in line with all the other tuitions to other high schools in the area. Feel free to check them out.

Hind sight is 20/20 and while I am certain, that we will look back at this moment and see that we could have done things a little better, it is a moot point. Right now, our children need this, the Phillipsburg School District and all the wonderful teachers need this, you, Pohatcong resident, need this without you even realizing it.
