The loud piercing beep of the alarm clock roused the doctor from her sleep. She lay in the bed staring up at the ceiling after reaching over to slap the off button. With a soft groan she slipped out from under the arm thrown across her upper body and pulled the covers up around the still sleeping form of her girlfriend. She stood for a moment watching as the blonde made sleepy mewling noises then quieted. Smiling down at the sleeping woman, she turned away from the bed and made her way to the bathroom to get ready for her long day.

Sam opened her eyes and watched as Janet disappeared into the bathroom, when she heard the shower turn on she closed her eyes once again, to grab a little more sleep until Janet emerged. The blonde Captain had just completed a two day mission but instead of staying on the base she’d come home…her new home. Having recently moved in with Janet and Cassie, it was now her responsibility as well to help the doctor raise the young girl. So after checking the duty roster and seeing that Janet was supposed to be in at five in the morning, she’d made her way to the house instead of crashing in her base quarters.

The sound of running water ceased then the bathroom door creaked open a few minutes later as Janet emerged wrapped in a towel and made her way to the closet to get a clean uniform. She flipped through the hanging items then cursed softly, there were no uniforms. Silently fuming at her own stupidity for not taking her clothes to the cleaners she heard a sleepy voice ask, “What’s wrong, hun?”

The doctor turned around to find Sam propped up on her elbow with her sleep tousled head resting on her hand. Janet gave her a smile and turned back to the closet. “I don’t have any clean uniforms; apparently I forgot to go to the cleaners this week,“ she said and grabbed a folded scrub suit from its place on the closet shelf. “Looks like its scrubs for me today,” she continued, turning and tossing the clothing on the bed.

Sam yawned and gave her a sleepy smile. “I can do that for you today if you want me to,” she told the doctor.

Janet moved to her dresser and opening a drawer removed several items. Letting the towel drop, she put on her undergarments and then turned to face Sam who was watching her with huge grin on her face. “You don’t have to do that, Sam. You’re already taking Cass to school for me today,” Janet replied to the blonde’s offer and then asked. “What is that grin for?”

“I like watching you get dressed. Almost as much as watching you undress,” Sam answered with the grin growing even bigger.

Janet chuckled and reached down, picking the towel up from the floor she tossed it towards Sam. The damp fabric landed on the blonde’s head and she lay there for a few seconds with it draped over her before she reached a hand up to pull it away. “See, normally I would retaliate but I know you have to finish getting ready so I’ll save payback for later tonight,“ she said and winked at the doctor.

Watching as Sam flopped back on the bed and stretched in a cat like move, Janet shook her head and replied, “I’ll hold you to that, my dear.” Changing the subject the doctor asked, “What time did you come in?”

Sam rolled over onto her stomach and crossed her arms, letting her chin rest on them and watched as Janet finished dressing. “Around two I think. I tried to be really quiet when I came in,” she answered.

“Why are you up now? You’ve had less than two hours of sleep, Samantha. Cassie doesn’t have to be at school until eight,” Janet informed her and gave her a hard stare.

Shrugging her shoulders Sam replied, “I can take a nap after you leave; no big deal.”

Janet walked back into the bathroom and soon returned, twisting her shoulder length hair into a small ponytail as she walked. “Okay, but make sure you get up in time to see that she eats a good breakfast, please,” she said going into mom mode for a second.

“Yes, Ma’am…good food for the kid,” quipped Sam.

Laughing softly, the doctor stood beside the bed, looking down at the smiling face of her girlfriend. “Will I see you for lunch today?” she asked.

“Yup, have to run tests on the samples I brought back with me last night. So, I’ll be in after I drop the munchkin off at school,” Sam replied.

“Don’t let her hear you call her that,” Janet admonished and flicked Sam’s nose with her finger.

The blonde giggled and tried to catch the finger but missed, so instead she reached up and grabbed a handful of green material then tugged Janet down to her level. Stopping so that the doctor’s face hovered inches away from hers’ she remarked, “Are you sure it’s not you who has a problem with the word munchkin?”

With a playful growl Janet gave the blonde a quick kiss and answered, “Looks like you’re not the only one who needs to plan some payback tonight.” She gave Sam another quick peck on the lips and then stood up, untangling the blonde’s hand from her scrub top. “I need to leave or I’ll be late,” she commented and turned away from the bed to grab her purse. “I’ll see you at lunch, sweetie,” she added, moving towards the door.

“Bye!” Sam called out as the doctor disappeared out the door and down the hallway. Grabbing her pillow, Sam tucked it under her head and closed her eyes; time for a little nap before she woke Cass up to get ready for school.

“Sam…Sam! Wake up!” A voice said in her ear and followed with a rough shake to her shoulder.

“Go away, Daniel, I have twenty more minutes until my watch,” the blonde mumbled and turned over, pulling the bedspread with her.

Ever the persistent one, Cassie climbed onto the bed and jumped onto Sam’s prone body. “Wake up! I’m going to be late for school!” the child said in her loudest voice.

Sam expelled a rush of air and a loud “oof” noise as Cassie bounced on her, “What?! Cassie? Oh, crap! What time is it?” Sam asked as her brain registered who was waking her up.

“Almost eight o’clock, I have to be at school soon,” the young girl told her, moving so Sam could untangle herself from the covers.

“Damn…food…did you eat anything yet?” Sam asked as she tossed the bedspread out of the way and jumped up from the bed.

“Poptarts and milk,” Cassie answered as she watched Sam pull on a pair of sweats and slip her tennis shoes onto bare feet.

Sam stopped for a second glancing around for her keys and gave the child a look. “I guess that will have to do, just don’t tell your mom. She’ll kill me for not getting up and making you breakfast,” Sam said as she ran a hand through her spiked hair and spotted her keys on the dresser.

“I tried to wake you up a little earlier but you just mumbled something and rolled over,” Cassie said as she climbed off the bed and stood waiting for Sam to grab a jacket.

Doing just that Sam slipped the jean jacket on and then stopped suddenly when she noticed the child’s outfit. “Can you wear that school?” she asked waving a hand at the girl’s clothes.

Cassie plucked at the huge t-shirt and plaid pajama pants. “Sure, the other girls wear them all the time,“ she replied innocently.

Sam gave her an odd look and said, “Okay, I’ll let the pants slide but go put on a shirt that fits, kiddo…and make it quick.” She gave the girl a little push towards the door and the two left the bedroom, making a stop in Cassie’s room for her to change the t-shirt and get her jacket.

Once downstairs they gathered Cassie’s school gear and left the house. Sam did her best to keep her car’s speed under the limit as they made their way towards the school. Just before they reached the building she asked Cass, “What about lunch? Was I supposed to make you something?”

“Well, Mom usually does but I can eat the food at school…just this once,” she replied, grinning at Sam.

“Do you need money?” Sam wondered aloud.

“That would help,” the girl replied.

Coming to a stop before the school building with a few minutes to spare, the blonde put the car in park and searched her jacket pockets coming up with a five dollar bill which she handed to the girl. “Okay, hurry up so you can make it in before the bell rings,” she told Cassie.

Cassie leaned over a planted a kiss on Sam’s cheek before she climbed out of the car. “See you tonight,” the girl said shutting the car door.

Sam watched her skip into the building and put the car in drive, starting out for the base, deciding to change when she got there.

Several hours later, Sam was hunched over the table in her office inputting data into her laptop when she heard a throat being cleared. Looking up she saw Janet standing in the doorway of the lab. “Hi,“ the blonde said, smiling at the doctor.

“Did you forget about lunch?” Janet asked, walking into the room.

Sam glanced at the clock on the wall and gave Janet a sheepish look. “Sorry, I lost track of time.”

“That’s okay, we can still go grab something if you want,” the doctor replied.

“Okay,“ said Sam and she put the laptop on stand by, then the pair left her lab on the way to the commissary.

As they walked towards the elevator Janet glanced up at Sam. “So, did everything go okay this morning?” she asked.

“Umm…sure, smooth as silk,” Sam replied but didn’t look at the doctor.

They entered the open elevator car and Janet leaned against the back wall with her arms crossed. She watched as Sam fidgeted slightly and avoided her gaze. “If everything went so smoothly why did the school call me this morning about Cassie’s outfit?”

“Outfit? What was wrong with her clothes?” Sam asked innocently.

“It seems she failed to wear the proper pants today. They have a dress code they follow, Sam. Didn’t I tell you that?” Janet explained.

“Nooo…I think I would have remembered you telling me about a dress code, Janet,” the blonde replied, rocking back on her heels as the car moved towards its destination.

“Cassie didn’t tell you either?” the doctor asked.

“Nope, she sure didn’t. In fact, she told me they wore stuff like that all the time,” the blonde said quickly.

Janet chewed on her bottom lip and thought for a few seconds before she said, “I guess it’s time for a talk with her then. She knows better than to fool you like that.”

“I’ll let you handle that one, Janet,” Sam said as the doors opened and she walked out of the elevator at a brisk pace.

The doctor hesitated a moment then followed her out, trying to catch up. “Did you fix her breakfast?”

Sam turned around and walking backwards replied, “Yup.” And turned back around increasing her pace away from the doctor.

“Why are you running from me? Sam? What did she eat?” Janet asked, trying to catch up.

Sam didn’t answer but kept walking and as she neared the commissary all she could think was maybe she could change the subject somehow before Janet got her to admit to the Poptarts.
