The soulful sounds of Motown’s best groups drifted through the house as the auburn-haired woman danced a little shuffle step into the kitchen. She’d spent the better part of her day doing housework and readying food for their evening meal. Opening the cabinet under the sink she put away some of the cleaning supplies then peered out of the window trying to spot Sam and Cassie. The blonde had volunteered to cut the grass and then drafted the young girl to weed the flowerbeds. Janet took care of the inside chores.
Not seeing them from the window but hearing the sound of the mower’s engine, Janet moved away from the sink to check on the items in the oven. She pulled out the rack containing a large roast and, after basting it with some of the juice, pushed it back in to cook more. Using the oven mitt, she pulled out the second rack which held a bubbling pan of her famous (according to her girls) three cheese macaroni. Seeing that it had reached the desired color on top, she transferred it from the oven to the counter to cool down some.
The doctor then turned back to the oven and closed it, moving the setting down just a little bit so the roast wouldn’t dry out. With a happy smile she opened the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water, leaned against the center island, removed the cap and took a long drink. “Maybe I should take the girls some cold drinks?” she mused aloud. Nodding her head, she re-opened the fridge and took out two more bottles. She was halfway out of the kitchen on her way to the back door when she heard a muffled crash and a scream. Dropping the water, she rushed to the door and flung it open.
Running out onto the back deck, she heard Cassie’s voice cry out, “Sam!”
The doctor jumped from the deck, forgoing the steps, and ran in the direction the cry came from. Rounding the corner of the house she spotted her daughter kneeling beside the overturned lawnmower trying to help Sam up from the ground. Running up to the pair she saw the mower had plowed a furrow into one of her flowerbeds and taken off a nice swatch of bark from the tree in the middle of it.
“Don’t move, Sam. Are you hurt? What happened?” she asked in a rush of questions.
Using Cassie as a prop, Sam pulled herself up from the ground and with a small laugh replied, “I’m okay, but the mower needs a little TLC.” She held up the steering wheel of the big machine and with a bashful look said, “Sorry about your flowers.”
Janet shook her head. “To hell with the flowers and the lawn mower, Sam; are you hurt?”
Sam shrugged her shoulders and replied, “Nah, I’m okay, just a few scratches. Might have some nice bruises tomorrow but other than that I’m good.” She smiled at the doctor and then her eyes grew wide then looked down at Cassie, who stood beside her. “Where’s the dog?” she asked.
“Explain to me what happened, please,” Janet said to the two. “What does the dog have to do with you wrecking the mower and almost breaking your neck?” she added with an inquisitive glare at them.
“I was making a loop to head back down by the deck and he ran out in front of me. When I turned hard to miss him the steering wheel came off. I had just enough time to disengage the blade and then that’s when I ran into the tree,” Sam explained.
“I saw him run under the deck, Sam,” said Cassie in answer to the blonde’s question.
“Go check on him, kiddo, and I’ll get the mower righted,” Sam told her and gave her a little push towards the deck.
Janet watched the two of them talk and then spoke up, “The mower can wait, come with me and let me put something on those scratches, Sam,” the doctor said in an authoritative tone.
“All right,” Sam conceded and hooked an arm around Janet’s shoulders. They reached the deck and Sam saw Cassie trying to lure her dog out from under it with bone. “You go get your kit and I’ll help Cass get the dog,” Sam told the doctor. Janet nodded and walked up the steps then into the house through the still open back door.
Sam watched her disappear and then she whistled. Both the dog and Cassie soon appeared by her side and she gave them a wink. “We keep the real reason for the accident between the three of us,” she said to them.
Cassie knelt down next to her dog and said, “Oh, yeah, if Mom found out you were racing me on the mower, she’ll throw a fit. I bet she’d ground both of us.”
“For life,” Sam said in agreement and then added. “What did you do with your bike?”
“Behind the bushes,” Cassie said pointing at the large gardenia bush by the corner of the house.
“Well, go get it and put it up before she gets back,” Sam told her then watched as the girl and her dog ran fro the discarded bike.
Sam ran a hand through her hair and blew out a breath. “Next time we stick to video game racing,” she muttered and sat on the steps waiting for Janet to return.
