“Unscheduled off world activation,” the voice of Sgt. Harriman announced over the intercom.

General Landry trotted quickly down the stairs. “What do we have, Walter?” he asked, coming to stand behind the technician.

“SG-1’s IDC code, Sir, but they aren’t due back for ten more hours,” the be-speckled man replied.

“Well, open the iris and let ‘em come home, Sgt,” the General ordered.

“Yes, Sir,” replied Walter as he keyed in the sequence, opening the iris.

The metallic shield slid back, revealing the rippling blue event horizon, and two figures emerged, followed by a third. The men of SG-1 walked down the ramp and Lt Col. Cameron Mitchell looked up at the control booth. “Leave it open a little bit longer, Walter,” he called out.

Landry leaned over Walter’s shoulder, speaking into the mic, “Where are Colonel Carter and Vala?”

“They’ll be along shortly, Sir…had to get rid of their uniforms,” Mitchell replied with a crooked smirk on his face.

“What?” the General asked.

Before Mitchell could answer his superior two figures emerged from the Stargate. Both women were clad only in tank tops, boxers and their boots; their faces and hair were streaked with drying mud. Sam stomped her way down the ramp cradling her right arm, followed by Vala. She sat down on the end and the dark-haired woman helped remove the blonde’s boots then did the same with her own. Teal’c took the footwear from the women and walking a little ways back up the ramp, tossed the boots back through the Gate.

“That was my favorite pair of boots, damn it,” grumbled the blonde as she stood up.

“I said I was sorry, Sam,” Vala said meeting Sam‘s eyes with a stubborn look.

“I know you’re not normally this klutzy so you must have a reason for wishing me harm,” Sam stated.

“I didn’t mean to trip, it was an accident, I swear,“ Vala replied from her seated position.

Before Sam could respond the General’s voice came over the intercom, “Ladies, I take it you had a little mishap? Why don’t you get cleaned up and tell me all about it during the de-briefing.”

Sam turned to look up at the control booth. “I need to go to the infirmary first, Sir. I think I sprained my shoulder,” she told him with a slight grimace on her face.

“Very well, de-briefing in two hours, that should give you both enough time,” he replied.

Sam waved her agreement with her non-injured arm and moved towards the blast doors; she was followed by Vala at a close distance. Mitchell glanced at Daniel and motioned with his head for the archeologist to go with them. “Make sure they don’t kill each other on the way up to the infirmary, Jackson.”

Daniel nodded and moved quickly to catch up with the two women as they entered the elevator. Slipping in between them as they stood in the car, he rocked back on his heels and whistled softly as the doors closed; the tension in the car was so thick you could cut it with a knife, he thought. And he was proven correct as the two women began making snide remarks back and forth on the way to the infirmary.

*************

By the time the car reached it’s destination, Daniel was ready to run for cover. The only thing stopping the two women from coming to blows, it seemed, was the fact he stood between them.

“So, last time it was my knee. Are you trying to take me down body part by body part?” snapped Sam as the doors opened.

“Well, if you didn’t stop so close to me then this wouldn’t have happened,” retorted Vala.

“Close? For crying out loud, Vala, you walked up on me. I told you it could only hold one person at a time,” snarled Sam as she moved out of the elevator.

Vala began to follow and Daniel grabbed her arm. “Do you really want to follow that close behind her? After all, that’s what caused all of this to begin with,” he told her.

Vala tugged her arm out of his grasp. “Just stay out of it Daniel,” she told him her tone dripping with venom.

He watched her move quickly after the other woman and rubbing his face in his hands sighed, then tried to catch up with them. “Maybe Teal’c should have done this,” he muttered.

Janet heard the loud voices approaching the infirmary and recognized the upset tones of her partner and their lover. She lay the clipboard in her hands down and waited as the voices grew closer and louder. The two women soon appeared in the doorway, both trying to talk over the other as they entered.

The doctor watched as the argument grew in intensity and finally she yelled out, “That’s enough!”

The two women both stopped their speech in mid sentence at the doctor’s outburst. They waited as Janet moved closer to them before both started to speak again but the doctor held up a hand, halting anything else they might say. She wrinkled her nose as she picked up a pungent odor. “What is that smell?”

“Bog mud,” muttered Sam, “it was all her fault.”

“My fault…it was yours for stopping in the middle of the log,” Vala stated.

“I don’t care who’s fault it was. Sam, I’m assuming your shoulder is hurt since you’re not moving it.” The doctor asked her taller partner.

The blonde nodded. “I think it’s just a sprain.”

The doctor shook her head and replied, “I’ll be the judge of that. You go with Beth to x-ray and you,” she said, pointing to Vala, “Are you injured?”

“A few bumps and bruises,” the brunette admitted.

“Fine, use the infirmary shower to get cleaned up. You can have some scrubs to put on,” the doctor told her. “Move now, both of you!” Janet said in a stern voice.

Both women began to protest but one look from the small doctor silenced it and they grudgingly moved in separate directions to do as they had been told. Janet watched them walk away and glanced back to the doorway where Daniel stood. “Are you hurt?” she asked.

Shaking his head, the man replied, “No, I’m fine. Cam sent me with them to make sure they made it here okay.”

“Want some coffee or do you need to get changed?” the doctor asked her friend.

“Coffee would be nice after the morning I’ve had,” Daniel said with a sigh.

“Would you care to explain what just happened here?” Janet asked as they moved towards her office.

Waiting until they were inside and he had a fresh cup of coffee in his hands Daniel told her, “I have no clue, Janet.” Taking a sip of the drink, he went on to explain how it seemed both of the women had been in a bad mood the moment the gated out this morning. “We were moving slowly through a marshy area and they were bringing up the rear. We crossed over this big log and I heard a loud yell then I turned to find them both in the mud. The bickering started while we were pulling them out and it didn’t stop until now, when you yelled at them.”

Janet sipped her coffee. ”Maybe it’s stress, you all have been pushing yourselves pretty hard trying to find ways to fight the Ori. This might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back with the two of them,” mused the doctor.

“Maybe, but can you do anything about it?” he asked and when she gave him a raised eyebrow look he quickly added, “Order some downtime for the two of them, I mean.”

“Well, the General has canceled all leaves until we find a way to stop the threat from the Ori but I may be able to get them a day off. As for getting them to apologize to each other, that might take a little more time, “ Janet told him.

Daniel finished his coffee and rising from the chair placed the empty cup on the doctor’s desk. “Well, I’m going to go change. Good luck with the two cranky ones,” he said giving Janet a small smile.

Janet rolled her eyes and grinned. “Gee thanks, Daniel. Are you sure you don’t want to stick around in case I need you to pull them apart?” she joked.

Raising his hands and shaking his head the archeologist backed out of the office, “They’re all yours.” With that said he left the infirmary before the fireworks started again.

************

Janet sat behind her desk trying to figure out what to do about the two women when Beth appeared at the door. “Colonel Carter’s x-rays are up on the board and she’s waiting on you behind curtain one, Dr. Fraiser.”

“Thank you, Beth. I’m on my way,” the doctor replied but before rising from her desk grabbed something out of her purse in the drawer then made her way back out into the infirmary.

She looked over the x-rays then walked towards the curtained area. Slipping behind the curtain she found Sam sitting on the gurney, her bare feet swinging back and forth. “Well, you were right. It’s just a sprain; you can get cleaned up and then come back so I can wrap it.”

“Okay,” Sam said and started to slip off the gurney but Janet stopped her.

“Do you want to tell me what’s going on with you and Vala?” the doctor asked her partner.

Sam shrugged her shoulders and sighed. “I guess we both just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, Jan,“ the blonde said meekly.

“I think the two of you need some time off…together,” remarked Janet.

“Right now I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Sam replied.

“Oh, I insist…here,” Janet said and tossed something towards her partner.

Sam caught the object, a credit card, and gave the doctor a confused look. Janet smiled and said, “You both need a girl’s day out, my treat.”

“Are you sure?” Sam asked with a look of confusion on her face.

“Yes, go shopping, get pampered at a spa or something. Just relax for the day, Sam,” the doctor assured her.

At that moment Vala stuck her head through the curtain, all traces of mud gone from her hair and face along with the odor. “Is she okay?” the brunette asked in a sheepish tone.

“She’s fine, Vala. I think the two of you need to talk and besides I have reports to work on so,” she gave Sam a look, “have fun today and I’ll see the two of you later tonight.”

Both women nodded and Vala moved to sit on the gurney with Sam as Janet left the curtained area. Sitting there quietly Vala wrinkled her nose. “You stink,” she said softly and then muttered something Sam couldn’t quite catch.

“What was that?” the blonde asked.

Speaking louder Vala repeated herself. “I said, you were right. It was my fault.”

“I think it was actually both our faults,” admitted Sam.

They gave each other a look, then smiled. Vala cleared her throat. “So, what were the two of you talking about?”

“Janet has ordered us to take a day off,” Sam told her.

“Well, I guess I can catch up on some reading,” mused Vala.

“Nope, we’re going shopping after the de-briefing,” Sam remarked holding up the credit card, “Janet’s treat.”

“Oooo, really?” Vala asked with a big smile.

“Yup, I’ll get cleaned up, we’ll get the de-briefing over with and then go put a dent in this card,” Sam replied thumping Vala on the arm as she stood up from the bed.

“Okay, I’ll meet you in the conference room,” Vala replied as she slid off the gurney, “I’m going to change into something other than these scrubs.”

From the alcove leading to her office Janet watched the two women in her life share a laugh at something as they walked out of the infirmary. She smiled and said to herself, “Problem solved, let’s just hope they don’t bankrupt me.” Chuckling softly the doctor turned and made her way to the office to finish her reports.
